#politics #unitedstates #NobelPrize The city of Philadelphia, the birthplace of the Constitution, is hosting the only debate of the critical 2024 general election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Both political parties, representing antipodal political views, Harris on the far left and Trump on the far right have raised serious and unacceptable concerns about the political viability of the founding documents of the United States, Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Philadelphia is named after the Greek words "phílos" (meaning "love" or "friendship") and "adelphós" (meaning "brother"). Combined, the name means "City of Brotherly Love." The city was founded in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker, after whom the state of Pennsylvania, a key swing state in this election, is named, who chose the name as part of his vision to create a place where people of different religious beliefs could live together in harmony. Penn's naming of Philadelphia reflected his desire for the city to embody principles of tolerance, peace, and unity, which were central to Quaker beliefs. Benjamin Franklin played a pivotal role in the history of Philadelphia, where he lived for much of his life after moving there in 1723. In Philadelphia, Franklin became a successful printer, publishing the "Pennsylvania Gazette" and "Poor Richard's Almanack," which brought him wealth and fame. Franklin was a prominent figure contributing to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, both of which were discussed and signed in Philadelphia. His experiments with electricity and inventions, like the lightning rod, solidified his legacy as a leading scientist and inventor both in Europe and in America. The upcoming debate scheduled for September 10, 2024, will be organized by ABC News. The event will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and will be moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis. This is the first of the planned debates between Harris and Trump for the 2024 presidential election. The venue, National Constitution Center (NCC) in Philadelphia, is an important institution dedicated to the U.S. Constitution and American civic education. It was established by the Constitution Heritage Act of 1988. Located on Independence Mall, just steps away from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, the NCC serves as both a museum and an educational hub. The Constitution Heritage Act of 1988 was a federal law enacted by the U.S. Congress to create the National Constitution Center (NCC) in Philadelphia. The primary goal of the act was to establish a museum and an educational center dedicated to promoting public understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, this act represented an effort to enhance civic education and encourage public engagement with constitutional principles. "Read Kamala Harris (D) v. At Represent Justice, we share in the anxiety and concern that is rippling through our community and through all people who believe in a country filled with compassion, empathy and love. The fear and apprehension we have about what the results of this election mean for justice is not only real, but a painful reminder of how much work is left to be done. As Frederick Douglass stated, “Power concedes nothing without a demand.” ?We started our current path four and a half years ago, in the midst of an incredibly difficult political time – a pandemic, civil unrest due to murders at the hands of police, and an endless stream of narratives about punishment coming from the White House, as well as local elected leaders across the country. What struck me was the love shared by our Ambassadors, and how they supported one another through thick and thin, amplifying voices and building a community of stories we could rely on for strength and solidarity. It was all the infrastructure we needed. There are no secrets or shortcuts in the road ahead. The need for us to connect now is greater than ever. The solution will be to surround ourselves with the opposite of the feelings of today. As feelings of defeat, isolation and discouragement pass, we will return to encouraging each other, inspiring each other, remembering our history, and sharing our triumphs, however small they may feel. As during that difficult time, our feelings and commitment at Represent Justice remain the same; we will continue empowering those impacted by unjust systems until they can speak truth collectively, with dignity and self-determination. Building the power of people through systems of love and accountability will win. We are not strangers to one another. We are not starting from scratch. And we are not finished. Prefacing: This is not partisan. It applies to both parties. It’s imperative that we?uphold the pillars of civil discourse and respect in our elected government! Regardless of party lines, it's crucial for our leaders to show respect for their fellow public servants and the citizens they represent. Our nation has a rich history of leadership through civil discourse in representative government, and it's our duty to honor and uphold this tradition. In a time when polarization seems to dominate the political landscape, we can’t forget that we're all in this together. Our differences and opposing viewpoints should be embraced as opportunities for dialogue and growth, not as reasons for division and animosity. We the people must demand that our elected officials engage in constructive debates, listen to opposing viewpoints with an open mind, and work collaboratively towards solutions that benefit all Americans. By treating each other with dignity and respect, we set an example for the world and for future generations, reaffirming the strength of our democracy. Together, let's build a political culture rooted in civility, understanding, and mutual respect. #CivilDiscourse #Respect #Unity #RepresentativeGovernment #1 Peter 2:17???? https://lnkd.in/g6VExm4b

New on the blog at https://lnkd.in/eT-upNzm -- "President Biden just challenged us to re-engage with our values. Will we accept?" by HarvardNegotiation MediationClinicalProgram Asst. Director Sara del Nido Budish. The country now faces a unique opportunity, and a big challenge: to translate abstract and aspirational values into a process over the next month and beyond. Ideally, the stakeholders to the process should be the ones determining the guiding values. In the case of the election, we—the American people—are the stakeholders. What values should shape the process for selecting a Democratic nominee? Image: "White House and Green Grass" by Gryerbaby CC0 1.0

Reviewing the Missouri Compromise, whereby a democratic majority assigned to themselves 3/5th more votes to every slave owner by number owned, and by a self assigned majority on the issue of slavery, caused us to enter the Union as a slave State, instead of a free State which we more widely desired. It remains for an everlasting example of the tyranny of the majority by the imposition of a direct democracy. Most States do not honor a concurrent majority within the State, though every State should. Every State in the union is chartered as a Representative Republic and guaranteed a Republican form of government within the State. This precludes the operation of the State, for State wide decisions as a straight democracy. We are now faced with many decisions that are not being tempered by the inclusion of proper elected representation of the equal minority populations in every District in our State House. Where a direct democracy ends, a republican form of government begins. This happens at the State House District level every legal citizen vote is accounted for in equal representation by the closest possible association for representation. I support a concurrent majority requirement for ratification of any decision of legislation affecting the whole State. The fair and just expression of a representative government demands a concurrent majority, for equal representation and better solution in more perfect union. #VoteDaveThomasMO36 https://lnkd.in/gxYgbTDe
