It's Brake, the road safety charity Road Safety Week. This year the focus is on road victims, raising awareness of the devastating impact of road collisions on families, friends and across communities. Road Safety Week is a great opportunity to focus everyone’s attention on making roads safer so that everyone can travel in a safe and healthy way. CLOCS is the national Standard for ensuring the safest construction vehicle journeys, reducing risk to vulnerable road users, improving air quality and congestion, and driving operational efficiencies. More than a third of UK road deaths involve someone who was driving for work. If you employ people who drive for work, you can play a vital role in preventing road collisions and reducing the risk of road death and harm, while improving your reputation and reducing costs. Over 5,500 vulnerable road users are killed or injured every year on UK roads in collisions with vehicles commonplace in construction – that’s 20 people every working day. HGVs only represent around 4% of all traffic on our roads but are involved in around 20% of pedestrian fatalities and a staggering 78% of cyclist fatalities. Every number is a real person with real injuries – traumatising the casualty, their family, the driver, and witnesses. It will cost time, effort and no doubt some financial investment to reduce work related road risks – but how much could it cost if you don’t? During Brake’s #RoadSafetyWeek, we’ll be sharing resources so that we can work together to manage work-related road risk.
