Enjoyed presenting the power of storytelling at CLO Exchange in San Diego with Ross alumni Jerry Won & Jen Hollingsworth, and my Ross EE colleagues Sara Bozer and Shaun Whitehouse. Capturing and sharing our stories is an example of leadership reflective practice, the process of leadership growth and development. Stories create energy and bonds of connection by letting our guard down and being vulnerable. So we began by being curious, and asking each other, "What's your story?" We discovered that when we encourage others to tell their stories, we uncover the hidden worth and wisdom of the people all around us. As Jerry Won pointed out, storytelling is an act of service to others, creating environments where it's safe to be real with each other -- environments of high trust -- where learning takes place. Jen told her story of starting with nothing, taking a big leap, and eventually reaching the C-Suite. The metaphor of the Petoskey Stone (thanks Nate Kline) expresses that real life is full of difficult situations that grind and polish us, yet it's those very experiences that reveal what's beautiful inside, and that offer hope to others. #RossEE #GoBlue
So cool, Gene Mage! The Petoskey stone is such a great metaphor for working through adversity to find and showcase your true self. Plus, it's Michigan's state stone. Go Blue!
This was a really great session! I learned a lot and have a ton of takeaways. Thanks Gene, Jerry and Jen!
Jerry Won and Jen Hollingsworth Wow! Go Blue!!
