Making a Difference We all want to make a difference in the world. We all want to matter. This is a fundamental human need. If you run a business or really, any organization with people, it is important, essential even to show people how they make a difference in their jobs and how the company makes a difference. When I ran a contractor organization, I liked to be the final interview before someone was hired (unless I was hiring a direct report, which was obviously different). I would ask a prospective employee to take a seat and ask him about himself, something outside of work. I would ask about interests and goals. I would try to show interest in the person, show that he mattered to me as a person. At some point, I would tell the person how important his job was to the company. Then, I would talk about how important the company was to our customers. "We serve the people who service our nation," I would say. "These are the people who keep our lights on at night, who make sure our toilets flush and our showers are hot, who keep our homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and who improve our building environments to make them more functional and enjoyable. What they do is essential. It matters." I would continue. "The problem is too many of them live lives of sustainance when they deserve lives of prosperity. They know how to turn a wrench, but not how to turn a profit because they have have been to trade school, but there is no owner school. And this is where we come in. We help them 'improve their business and financial performance, leading to a profitable exit.' It's our mission and it's not just words on paper. It's what we believe. It's a calling." By this point, I'm getting would up and more intense. "If you want to be part of our team, you have to internalize our mission. When we help a business prosper and we help the owners and their families, the employees and their families, their suppliers and customers. We help the community. We make a difference in people's lives." Show people how they matter. Tell them how what the company does matters. Be sure to watch the short video on the starfish story.

Hey Tara Rummer, louder for the people at the back! All, if you've been following us for a while you'll know that company culture is something we talk about ad nauseam. Having a defined company culture makes hiring and retention a breeze. Why? Because you know who you're looking for, and the people that work for you understand what you stand for and know how to conduct themselves as a member of the team. To anyone who is struggling to define your company's culture I recommend bringing your team together and asking them what they think.

The Power of the Dark Side I had the honor of tuning into the dark side for Brkthru’s annual One Day Sale event where our team theme was “Empires Strike Back”. Here are some words of wisdom from the Dark Lord of the Sith. Be careful not to choke on your aspirations. Regardless of whether you're an agency, advertiser, or seller we all want to grow. As I tune into the dark side I am reminded to play the long game and have patience. I find your lack of faith disturbing. Any large project is often going to involve multiple departments and stakeholders. Sometimes it’s hard for people on the outside to see the big picture of the plan. This dark side takeaway is two fold: have faith in your people and also work to share your vision of the big picture in a way that is digestible for people on the outside. You don’t know the power of the dark side! I think emotion or passion has been a huge ally but also a hindrance for me as I grow throughout my career. Tuning into the dark side of the force can power your relationships with trust through authenticity but be careful not to dive in too deep and lose your head.

Being part of a start-up is a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s not just about a career or working with a team—it’s an intense journey, packed with challenges, growth, and moments that stay with you forever ?? What makes this journey so extraordinary? It’s the people you share it with. The culture you build together. The sense of belonging that turns "work" into something deeply meaningful?? ?? In my work with organizations, I’ve seen how vital it is to create a strong cultural foundation—one built on trust, collaboration, and connection. A positive work environment doesn’t happen by chance; it’s the result of deliberate effort. And it’s what enables teams to face the inevitable ups and downs with resilience and purpose ?? . This is the core of what I do: helping companies cultivate cultures where people feel inspired, supported, and empowered to do their best work. Because it’s not just about surviving the rollercoaster—it’s about thriving through the ride. ?? What role do you think culture plays in building strong, resilient teams? Let’s discuss! #StartupLife #CompanyCulture #Belonging #PeopleFirst?

Working in a start-up is more than just a job... It’s actually even more than family .... maybe a bit like one of those jungle camps—never watched, but sounds about right! ???? In some cases, it creates bonds that last a lifetime. ?? We’ve been on one crazy rollercoaster ride together, filled with incredible highs... and moments that tested us to the core. Last night, I enjoyed a great dinner with part of the former senior management team of woom. Such a great evening with Valerie Ferencic, Bernhard Schmidt and Nick Coverdale. Ulrike Katschnig, Alexander Kohl: You were definitely missed—we need to make it happen next time! ?

During the first 4 months of my 8-month Co-op at Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Canada, I was not very enthused by work. Editing daily financial reports was very technical and did not require business or economics thought. The new city of #Toronto and what it had to offer seemed much more interesting. At my one-on-one my manager told me she had seen me checking Facebook. She said she wouldn't know what to say to other colleagues if they saw it. She told me she offered me the Co-op because I was the best interviewee, and she expected me to perform on that level. I stopped with personal activity during my down times. It so happened that they stopped too. I was given a new task by my colleague Michael Mannella: explaining how the SQL algorithm for a certain report works. The HQ in Germany requested a detailed report on how the data in the database was handled to produce a result shared with them. I got into learning SQL, which I found tricky and challenging yet enjoyable. And did my type of work: explained the mechanism through text in an Excel file, structuring it logically. I presented after a month and Michael looked pleased and impressed. I was then given the next task by my other colleague. This time I was to design a new type of report, coding in SQL. I was enthused even more. I produced results, but every week at our one-to-one with the colleague he told me there are more efficient ways to code and he wants it done better. After several iterations, he was finally satisfied and now my task was to reconcile the results with another manager, who had to arrive at the same numbers via a non-coding approach. The test was successful and the new report, automated in Excel by me as well, was presented to upper management. My Co-op was coming to an end. Michael held a one-on-one with me regarding the experience. I had feedback regarding his management style and cried about his approach at work to me. In the meantime, my manager suddenly stopped greeting me and making small talk. It was very cold and bordering on rudeness. I even texted her asking if I did anything wrong but she replied that everything was ok. In my last days, a representative of upper management came around to our area to ask who designed the new report, paper in hand. My colleague acknowledged him and me. The representative congratulated us with the work. Then we had a farewell lunch and my manager presented me with souvenirs so I "remember the company". I was very sad they were not offering me a full-time position after graduation, since I knew the previous intern stayed on. I didn't hear from MBFS till August 2018. I received an email from the Canada Revenue Agency about a refund for taxes paid during Co-op. However, I knew I had already received my refund for the 8 months in 2015 in the spring of 2016. This letter said I had been employed at MBFS during the first 4 months of 2016. I was writing my MRP at the time and working as a Research Assistant for Brock.

Heard this in my first meeting of the day! “Wise man learns from his mistakes, Wiser man learns from the mistakes of others, The one who has all of the answers and who knows everything, is the fool in the room. “ One of the many reasons I love mentoring the next generation of investors and entrepreneurs because if they take the opportunity to learn from the silly things I’ve done they will be better for it. One of my peers in my role before joining Allied Federal Solutions LLC always used a term from the Bible of “Seek Wise Counsel” which I’m getting better at but always have room to grow. In this new role I’m getting to learn from some brilliant corporate officers on how to build culture, build the right team, and how to serve your team. Onward and upward.
