In August, The Collaborative of Native Nations for Climate Transformation and Stewardship (CNNCTS) partners from the Climate Science Alliance, Acjachemen Tongva Land Conservancy, California State University, Long Beach, the La Jolla Band of Luise?o Indians, SDSU Division of Research and Innovation, and University of California, Riverside held a special session at the 2024 ESA Annual Meeting. Our panel focused on the unique way we are working collaboratively to support Tribal climate adaptation, conservation, and biodiversity projects. “... a foundation of traditional knowledge and traditional teachings can apply, you know, their own way of addressing climate change. As I said, the next seven generations are what we're depending on to continue this work. You know, even if we don't live to see the change we're trying to enact, we work for them.” - Will Madrigal Jr., Tribal Capacities and Partnerships Program Manager Thank you to the 50+ attendees who joined us for the session. Special thanks to our colleagues and partners who participated and shared their stories of CNNCTS. Learn more on our blog! https://lnkd.in/gbXa64Jt

A sneak peek at my new book - work in progress - 'The Adventures of Captain Polo in Brazil', the 5th in the series of educational graphic novels about climate change. This book is dedicated to Brazil: its wonders, challenges, and some pretty cool climate action innovations. Watch this space. Meanwhile, check out Climate Cultures, the platform hosting this blog post. Climate Cultures is a pretty unique platform grouping a growing number of global citizens with two things in common: we all care about climate change and we are all creatives in some way. The marriage of science and art, one of my pet subjects. Do check it out and share widely. That in itself counts hugely as a form of climate action. #climateactionnow #climateeducation Mark Goldthorpe UC-CSU Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Projects (ECCLPs) SubjectToClimate Project Drawdown Tito Craige Kelley L. Captain Polo in Brazil – A Sneak Peek New on the ClimateCultures blog: author-illustrator and conservation biologist Alan J. Hesse exclusively previews his latest ‘The Adventures of Captain Polo’ graphic novel, showing his creative process as this savvy climate action ambassador explores Brazil’s threatened biodiversity and climate issues and solutions there. "Although Cap’n Polo will never be too serious in his adventures, he is a bear on a mission. Ever since through his own travels (see books 1 – 3) it eventually dawned on him that his tangible melting ice problem in the Arctic was actually also the problem of a lot of people and other animals around the world, he has to deliver on his promise to educate his readers about the critical issue of climate change." https://lnkd.in/eVKJZgMA

I am happy to say I will be attending UNFCCC SB 60 this June in Bonn, Germany! I am grateful to have been able to learn so much and also watch the Ocean & Climate Change dialogue develop over the last 2 years, and I hope to see in develop even more this year. This year the two topics are: 1. Marine biodiversity conservation and coastal resilience 2. Technology needs for the ocean - climate action, including finance links I hope that we can move in the right direction, have a meaningful dialogue, and ensure we move forward in a collaborative way highlighting underrepresented groups and integrating human rights. #plyMBIO #MarineBiology #UNFCCC #ClimateChange

Earlier this year, at Yayasan Madani, we embarked on promoting local climate adaptation efforts through the establishment of a "Localized Adaptation Hub." This innovative initiative, rooted in the concept of Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK), serves as a village-based biodiversity nexus. The recent paper by Pereira et al. (2022) elucidates the tangible benefits of this approach in fauna identification, signaling potential applications in flora identification. We are enthusiastic about leveraging these insights to further our mission of climate change adaptation.

The Big Butterfly Count is an annual national science project in the UK that starts today and will run until Sunday 4th August. The aim is to encourage people of all ages to observe and count butterflies and day-flying moths. Here’s why it’s important: Conservation Insights: By participating, you become a citizen scientist, contributing valuable data. The information collected helps experts understand how butterfly populations are faring and how environmental changes impact them. Climate Change Impact: Butterflies worldwide face threats due to climate change. Last year’s record temperatures affected the plants that caterpillars feed on. The Big Butterfly Count data can reveal how these beautiful insects have been affected. idverde’s Perspective: idverde recognises the significance of biodiversity. Supporting the Big Butterfly Count aligns with our commitment to preserving natural habitats and promoting environmental awareness. You can download your guide from the Butterfly Conservation website https://obi41.nl/sm3zr38t. Find a sunny spot, and join in! As a manager of marine and coastal science and programs at Parks Victoria, Michael Sams merges cutting-edge ecological research with hands-on strategic action, tackling complex challenges like climate change, invasive species, and kelp forest loss. Michael is passionate about building a deeper connection between people and the reef’s extraordinary biodiversity. “The more people know about the reef and its importance, the more support there is for protecting it. Public awareness and engagement drive political momentum and help secure funding for long-term conservation efforts,” he explains. He credits collaborations, like the Great Southern Reef Research Partnership, with bringing people together and amplifying the collective impact of their work. “What we’re learning from other states feeds directly into our strategies here in Victoria, creating a united front against threats like climate change and invasive species.”

Marine organisms are particularly sensitive to climate change. As our planet continues to warm, thousands of marine species are expected to be exposed to potentially unsafe temperatures across their ranges. Exposure to such unfavorable conditions can make habitats unsuitable for species persistence, affecting several ecological processes, and ultimately leading to ecological disruption and local extinctions. However, climate change is also creating new suitable habitats in regions that were previously unsuitable, offering opportunities for species to colonize new areas. But how do these two processes, exposure and opportunities, interact in space and time? Where and when will species be exposed to unsafe temperatures, and where will new habitat opportunities emerge as ocean temperatures shift? How long will these opportunities last? We answered these questions in our new paper: ?? ?? Temporal dynamics of climate change exposure and opportunities for global marine biodiversity https://lnkd.in/gpqmUmpv Christopher Trisos Alex Pigot Cory Merow
