The Africa Social Impact Summit held prior to the Lagos Investors Roundtable was a resounding success, serving as a powerful catalyst for driving sustainable development and social impact across the African continent. The summit themed: Reimagining Progress: A New Blueprint for Sustainable Growth in Africa, brought together over 2,000 leaders from diverse sectors, including government, business, civil society, and academia, to engage in thought-provoking discussions and forge strategic partnerships. During the panel session, discussions arised on the critical role of public-private partnerships in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in driving social impact across the continent. Sharing insights about the groundwork being done by Lagos State to allow businesses, SME, MSME and women, resonated with attendees, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable development and economic growth in Lagos State. The summit provided an excellent platform for networking and fostering partnerships among stakeholders dedicated to making a difference in Africa. The need to focus on Africa’s future is clear. As Mauritanian President and Chairperson of the African Union?Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and President of The World Bank Group Ajay Banga recently wrote in Project Syndicate, achieving a livable world that is free of poverty can only happen if the continent harnesses its abundant potential. Private sector companies including Kosmos Energy are essential to helping the continent progress. Our core business activities and social investment programs directly support three of the pillars mentioned in the article: – Improving access to electricity – The development of Africa’s abundant gas resources provides a lower-carbon, reliable and affordable energy source. As I discussed with President Ghazouani on a recent trip to Mauritania, this imperative to provide greater access to electricity is a key driver for our work on the next phase of the development of Mauritania’s gas.?Our projects in both Mauritania and Senegal provide natural gas for domestic power generation and also generate revenue for our host countries via exports, creating essential funding for critical national infrastructure. ? – Investment in agribusiness – Kosmos Innovation Center Ghana, Kosmos Innovation Center (MR) and Kosmos Innovation Center SENEGAL all work to foster entrepreneurship and introduce innovation in sectors beyond oil and gas, especially agriculture. Founded in 2016, Kosmos Innovation Center programs continue to grow and expand, engaging Africa’s young people in the challenge of making the continent’s agriculture more productive. ? – Strengthening health-care systems – By working with international nonprofits like Medical Bridges, we aim to do our part to get critical medical equipment and supplies to the hospitals and clinics in Africa that need them most.? ? This offers the prospect of distinctive green growth path that the continent could lead, when South Africa takes the helm of the G20. So many excellent nature enterprises - read about just a few of them in the peice below.

The bioeconomy - which ranges from the trading of biodiversity itself through to sustainable agriculture, fishing, forestry to aquaculture, eco-tourism and food - fuses bio and tech, while including nature investment opportunities. There are already many existing examples on the African continent where challenges are being turned into green opportunities. Yet, achieving a sustainable bioeconomy will rely on integration into mainstream economic plans as well as a realigning of both public and private financial flows to nature-positive outcomes. With the G20 leadership moving to South Africa in November, there is a real opportunity for Africa to champion greater investments into its bioeconomy.
