Thank you UNSW Medicine & Health for raising awareness of these important findings from our study published this morning in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry. It is so important that information is used to improve #youthmentalhealth, both through evidence based, sustainable cooling, increasing #youthmentalhealthcare and to prevent worsening #heat by transitioning off #fossilcoal #fossilgas & #fossiloil. Rise in suicidal behaviours among young people linked to hotter temperatures. Hot weather linked to an increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviours among young Australians, new research shows, prompting calls for an overhaul of public health approaches to higher temperatures. While taking in the #heatimpacts on #youthsuicidality, and knowing that other research shows these extend to all #childmentalhealth and #youthmentalhealth #emergency presentations https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37066768/ it is important to also remember that we already have ways to improve #coolshelter #sustainablecooling - but we need to implement them AND provide #mentalhealthcare. For example, established trees provide the cooling benefit equivalent of 1-2 air conditioning units...but they are #naturepositive https://assets.wwf.org.au/image/upload/pub-WWF_DEA_Trees-Health_Report_FINAL-03Mar23_3_-compressed?_a=ATO2Ba20
