Today, we joined forces with America Is All In and U.S. Climate Alliance for a joint meeting aimed at galvanizing local climate action & leadership in the aftermath of the US presidential election. Climate Mayors Chair and Mayor of Cleveland Justin M. Bibb reaffirmed that, “Mayors...are sending a resounding message that we are steadfast in our commitment to accelerating local climate action & meeting our established national goals under the Paris agreement during the 2nd administration of President Trump.” Gina McCarthy, former White House National Climate Advisor, 13th EPA administrator,? and current Managing Co-Chair of America Is All In stressed that, “We will do everything in our power to stop efforts to unwind the progress we have made.” We look forward to working alongside our partners to continue serving the needs of our communities in the fight for a safer, more resilient, and just future.

While the US election results appear to be a significant set back to climate action and sustainability, one person doesn't decide the fate of the entire planet. This is why we need to remain firm in our commitments. The "We Are Still In" movement deeply inspired me when Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement in 2017. This movement assembled cities and states who remained committed to Paris, including my own home state: Washington. US decisions have ripple effects around the world, but Trump's anti-climate agenda needs to be put in perspective, especially now. People everywhere have already learned how to remain committed. Over time, the reasons why have only become more clear. Science accurately predicts significant global consequences linked to greenhouse gas emissions, and burning fossil fuels is the number one source. Nearly all of us have directly witnessed these havoc-wreaking storms, droughts, extreme temps and wildfires in recent years. These impacts will only get worse as more fossil fuels are burned. To address these impacts, global climate targets have been set with public input and near unanimous support. Expanded ESG reporting rules have been adopted in many countries and states, and massive amounts of data reflect the climate change impacts of individual companies. We have more visibility into their contributions, plans and targets than ever. Sustainable finance is increasingly rewarding climate transitions and risk reduction by companies, while global laws and norms are increasingly holding them accountable. Anyone can say the world is flat and that climate change is a hoax as a means to cast doubt on reality, but direct observation tells us otherwise. Lies about climate science almost always lead back to fossil fuel industries as a source. Their ulterior motives are clear: if the public doesn't believe climate change is important, their social license to operate remains intact. They face a huge uphill battle with this truth-defying agenda. We may not be able to ignore Trump's agenda, but we can respond to it from a place of deep commitment to our values and rational, pragmatic beliefs. We need to remain firm in our commitments to a better outcome for each other, younger generations and the future. #wearestillin #parisagreement #esg #sustainability

Spoiler - it is not great, but nevertheless I have hope. Link to article: https://lnkd.in/ebveFRQK

With the re-election of Donald Trump as President, we reaffirm our commitment to climate action alongside America Is All In and the U.S. Climate Alliance: “We will not waver…We will not turn back.” Collectively, we represent nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population and three-quarters of the U.S. GDP, so despite changes in leadership, America’s climate-leading states, cities, and institutions are steadfast in their efforts to build a healthier, more prosperous future for all. https://lnkd.in/eKYgEvni

When you've been working at #climateaction as long as I have, you learn to handle the ups and downs of federal policy. From 2017-2021, with so much executive action focused on rolling back US climate commitments and environmental regulations, it was critical to keep pointing to cities, counties, and states across America taking meaningful steps. Then, the Biden administration was a welcome opportunity to see groundbreaking policies and legislation coming out of the White House -- like the #InflationReductionAct. But even if the fate of some provisions in the IRA remains unclear under a second Trump administration, we have momentum. And it is still America's Climate Mayors who are leading the way. Keep the faith. Keep the momentum. Keep all eyes on the prize of a better future for all Americans.
