Meet Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C. Could Latin America’s small-scale fisheries become global leaders in marine ecosystem health and climate and social resilience? Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C. (COBI) in Mexico is a not-for-profit working with small-scale fishers across 161 communities, transforming them into hubs of sustainable seafood and marine life conservation. ?? Highlights: - Co-created marine reserves protecting 616 species across 685 km2. - Conducted 14,000+ ecological surveys with fisher-divers. - Published 250+ studies co-authored by local fishers. ?? Let's Celebrate World Bee Day! ?? Every year since 2018, on May 20th, we honor the essential role of bees and other pollinators in maintaining the health of our planet and its people. Thanks to the efforts of the Government of Slovenia and the support of Apimondia, this day was declared by the UN General Assembly. Bees and other pollinators are vital to our world, supporting agriculture and biodiversity globally. With over 20,000 species of bees and countless other wild pollinators, they face unprecedented challenges, with their populations dwindling. In celebration of World Bee Day, we are excited to introduce a series on projects created within the EU CAP Network Operational Groups. First of preject now on spotlight: Preservation of the Blackcurrant Sector in Burgundy and Franche-Comté: Securing Production Volumes and Organoleptic Quality in the Face of Climate Change: Adapting and Developing Innovative Agro-Ecological Practices This project is closely linked to the welfare of bees and other pollinators. ???? *Celebrating the Future of Rural Europe: Integrating Rural Needs into European Policies* ???? As the rapporteur on Biodiversity protection and coexistence with large carnivores in Europe, and on Promoting cultural policies in rural areas within the framework of development and territorial cohesion strategies and the 2030 Agenda, I am committed to ensuring comprehensive rural development by integrating rural needs into all European policies. Mountainous areas, less developed regions, and environmentally friendly extensive livestock farming play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, ecological balance, and preserving our cultural heritage. Small-scale farmers, particularly those focusing on cattle breeding, face significant challenges, and timely compensation systems for livestock damages are essential. Simplifying access, minimizing administrative hurdles, and providing local assistance will enhance participation rates and ensure better fund utilization in the local agricultural sector. Many rural areas, rich in natural value, are unique biocultural areas where the environment and local economy coexist sustainably, rooted deeply in the culture and traditions of these communities. To highlight and celebrate these unique aspects, I propose the launch of the European Year of Rural Europe. This initiative will focus on celebrating the cultural and creative value inherent in rural areas, underscoring our commitment to a sustainable future for European agriculture, fostering resilience, and promoting equitable growth across all sectors. International Day of Biological Diversity: Nurturing Life on Earth Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Biological Diversity, CropLife Africa Middle East reaffirms its commitment to protecting and preserving the incredible variety of life on our planet. Biodiversity is the foundation of healthy ecosystems, providing us with clean air, water, food, and countless other benefits that sustain our existence. Agriculture and biodiversity are intrinsically linked. The rich tapestry of life, from microorganisms in the soil to pollinators in the fields, plays a vital role in maintaining the health and productivity of our crops. However, the delicate balance of biodiversity is under threat from factors such as habitat loss, climate change, and unsustainable practices. Our efforts include: 1. Promoting integrated pest management strategies that minimise the impact on non-target species and ecosystems. 2. Supporting the development and adoption of innovative technologies that enable more efficient and targeted use of crop protection products. 3. Encouraging the creation and maintenance of biodiversity-friendly habitats, such as buffer zones and wildlife corridors, on and around agricultural lands. 4. Collaborating with partners to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the role of sustainable agriculture in its conservation. As these ecosystems dwindle, the Fermes d'Avenir association is committed to reversing this trend. As we approach the end of the year, we want to celebrate our collective achievements as a global organisation of forest stewards. Together with our network and partners, we have worked to protect and conserve what lies at the core of our mission - biodiversity in the world’s forests.?? ? Take a look at the key positive impacts that responsible forest stewardship has had on biodiversity in 2024!? ? ?? FSC-certified forests in Gabon and the Republic of Congo support more large mammals, including endangered species, than non-certified forests.? ? ?? In Poland, the updated FSC Standard prioritizes the protection of rare ecosystems and old-growth forests, supporting biodiversity hotspots and iconic species like the European bison and brown bear.? ? ?? The Fast-Tracking Biodiversity Assessment, led in collaboration with WWF and IKEA, shows FSC certification’s positive impact, from protecting over 300 threatened species in Brazil to setting aside 460% more area for forest conservation than required by law in Finland.? ? These efforts highlight the critical role of sustainable forestry in protecting biodiversity. ?? Building Resilience on?Ometepe Island: Conservation and Climate Adaptation in Action ?? Ometepe, an island in Lake Nicaragua, is a biodiversity hotspot and home to the critically endangered yellow-naped amazon. However, this unique ecosystem —and the livelihoods that depend on it —are under threat from the effects of deforestation and climate change. Fauna & Flora is collaborating with community cooperative, Cooperativa Biometepe R.L., to tackle these challenges.
