Hello LinkedIn Community! At the age of 15, I made the decision that I wanted to become a journalist. ?? Since that day, I have made sure that everything I do, contributes to my career path in journalism. ?? Initially, I found it hard to get consistent advice, or advice at all. Instead, I was met with warnings and words of discouragement. ?? I was repeatedly told: ?? - ? "Not many actually have the talent to become a journalist" - ? "The industry is saturated" - ?? "You will never earn much" - ? "You need to be prepared to work crazy hours" - ?? "Print journalism is dying" - "Oh, so you'll report fake news" As a teenager, hearing statements such as these can have a major impact on developing your career or maintaining motivation. ?? ?? Over the past 8 years, only two of which I have worked full-time in the industry, I have found that these statements can be true, but they are also very stereotypically of journalism from 10+ years ago. ?? ?? Today anyone who wishes to be a journalist, can be. As soon as someone picks up their phone and records a reel of them talking over fitness tips, they are inadvertently reporting. ?? The industry will also always need storytellers, reporters, writers, broadcasters, etc., etc. Journalism salaries can be low, but there are also some great opportunities to earn higher in the industry or perks of the job, such as attending some amazing events. You may work over hours, but it isn't that dramatic. Print will never die... In my opinion. And most journalists of course, do not report fake news. ?? Sometimes the way we express stereotypes of certain career paths can be really off-putting to younger generations. Instead, why don't we talk about the positives. Like how journalists get to be the voice for people who don't think they have one, or perhaps how we get to meet inspiring people and attend thought-provoking events. ?? Journalism for me has never been just my career path, it is my life. It weaves itself into everything I do and my entire personality. A Q&A with Toronto Metropolitan University as we start the fall semester - here's on one of the biggest lessons I've learned in this industry: Q: Is there anything that you learned over the course of your career that you're hoping to impart to the young journalists you'll be meeting this year? A: Just to always be open. Be open to story ideas, new ways of telling a story, be open to jobs or roles you hadn’t considered, to learning from everyone in every industry. The beauty of journalism is that you get to learn something new every single day, as long as you’re open to it.

“Discover your niche.” How many times I have heard this when attempting to understand which direction my words should take me in. From travel to immigration, food to feminism, my writing has visited many corners of my mind - and the world. So, I can attempt to understand the type of content I excel most in exploring. What potential employers may want from me. Though, not confining yourself to one area of discussion allows you to learn. To continue learning, always. Researching information and statistics for varied essays expands my knowledge and sustains my curiosity. What’s more, by writing on subjects I am not as familiar with, I can expand my networks and build connections with people who, otherwise, may not have been involved in my “niche” circle. #DiversifySkills

While working to break into the media industry, journalists become privy to the issues within this nexus that need to be addressed. Among the most notable issues is that of class: those making hiring decisions within news organizations should be mindful that certain socioeconomic groups lack representation. With journalism education being so expensive in many countries, it becomes a class issue when the result of this is an exceptionally low percentage of journalists that come from a working-class background. It does not help that these media jobs tend to be in the largest, most expensive cities, putting even more strain on a journalist’s life if they are trying to become successful in the field. When a journalist cannot make ends meet and cannot receive help from their family, they must turn to jobs in industries such as hospitality and retail among a myriad of other options. They are likely building experience in unpaid or underpaid newsroom gigs, so this is the best place for them to turn. These non-media jobs may feel irrelevant to the journalists, but they bring much more value to their future career than they would initially think. Recently a friend sent me a headline from satirical news site The Betoota Advocate that made me laugh, then weep a little: ‘Communications degree framed on the wall just like a real degree.’ My degree, a Bachelor of Communications Studies with a journalism major, meant a great deal to me – and, back in the early 2000s, to the industry as a whole. It wasn’t a ticket to a job, more the bare minimum needed to get an interview, and my particular degree at the Auckland University of Technology was regarded as the best in the country for any aspiring journo eager to tell stories that made a difference. Nowadays, with journalists regarded as among the least trusted professionals, newspapers and TV news struggling to survive, and journalism schools capping their intakes or shuttering, that satirical headline is wincingly accurate. No longer does journalism hold the esteem it used to, and while status isn’t important to me, respect is. Because when we don’t respect the news and the people who bring it to us, we’re paving the way for all manner of power abuses. My own communications degree is indeed framed, and once hung proudly on the wall, but over a couple of decades of renting flats and moving countries three times, it went missing. Would I still hang it proudly on my wall now, if I could find it? I’d like to think I would. My work may not have set the world on fire, but I am proud of it. Yet with journalism as a whole in serious crisis, looking at that degree is more likely to make me quietly wistful than anything else. #journalism #freelancejournalist

I remember vividly my first day at my first job in journalism. I had graduated the year before, then worked in retail for a few months to save up for a five-month stint of travelling in South America. I returned from Brazil tanned and a lot more worldly wise, applied for a few jobs, did a number of interviews and then landed my very first job as a writer. I was so excited, but also incredibly nervous. What would the expectations be? What would the people be like? Would an office job be any fun at all, or would it be very serious? Would I ever be able to dye my hair pink again?! Wearing a pair of cheap suit trousers and a crisp white shirt, I stepped into the office in Leeds and was thrown very much in at the deep end. I have to say, it's not my favourite of all the jobs I've had, but I learned a lot and met some great people (hi James McCann). Do you remember your first day at your first job? Hi everyone. I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am writing this post today to offer some advice to upcoming journalism school graduates. Whether you're from Cronkite, Syracuse, Northwestern, Mizzou, etc, this goes for everyone. I've noticed that a lot of people tend to freak out over the future and what it could hold. This is a completely normal feeling, and I want to provide some reassurance with these tips: Networking: I cannot stress this enough. START NOW. There are plenty of ways to get your name out there. Companies like Gray, Nexstar, and News-Press and Gazette visit most journalism schools all year round. Arranging a meeting through your school's career program would be a smart way to establish yourself with them. Once you go through the whole process, your name will be in the system by the time your job hunt begins. Recruiters being familiar with your name and work will increase your chances of landing an interview - maybe even a job. Also, ask for feedback when putting your reel together when graduation time is near. There are plenty of recruiters who would be more than happy to help. If these companies do not come to your school, just reach out to them. That's better than nothing. Location: I completely understand that a lot of people have dreams of working in their home cities and states. I would be a hypocrite if I said that I'm not one of those people. However, we need to be realistic a little bit when it comes to that first job. Just like all of your favorite ESPN and FOX Sports reporters, they also started small. Going somewhere like LA or New York isn't feasible right out of college unless you are very, very lucky. However, you would not receive the help that a small market would provide. Small markets allow you to make mistakes and rectify them. You will be better prepared for a larger market once you make the necessary changes to your journalism. There is no such thing as immediate results. Everything takes time. If you are good enough, you will end up in your preferred spot years from now. Mental Health: I'm no stranger to this one. In my opinion, this is the crux of what makes a good journalist. Again, it is completely normal to feel scared and nervous about what comes next. When the time comes to start applying, know what you want to do. Show potential employers that you care. Always be confident in your abilities. Remember: All you need is one person to believe. It won't matter if you are rejected from a hundred jobs. If one person comes to you and says that they believe in your capabilities, then that's all you need. While I'm still months away from graduation, I wanted to write this in the hopes of answering questions. I hope this helps. Have a great week.

Absurd and highly concerning, some #news organizations now require #job applicants to spend an entire day writing 8-10 news stories as part of a so-called assessment, with little intention of hiring them. This process not only wastes time and effort but also exploits aspiring #journalists eager to break into the industry. These practices, disguised as job tests, are unethical and take advantage of talent without offering fair #compensation or real opportunities. If left unchecked, this trend could become the norm, degrading the #hiring process and undermining the core values of fairness and respect in journalism. It’s time to call out and put an end to this exploitation before it further erodes trust in the profession.
