Workforce development. Digital inclusion. Economic mobility. Building a strong local economy. Engaging community. Literacy across a lifetime. These are all areas in which public libraries play a crucial role, and we need our legislators to understand the ways in which our teams contribute to regional infrastructure. #publiclibraries #infrastructure #communityengagement #economicempowerment
The nation’s largest public libraries anchor communities and serve as hubs for economic and community advancement. They provide critical resources across employment, health, information access, civic engagement and social services for jobseekers, small businesses, immigrants, seniors, families with children, students and those bridging the digital divide. To preserve, improve and expand the essential role of libraries in communities nationwide, ULC has released a set of policy recommendations for Congress to consider. As we head into an election year, the stakes couldn’t be higher for democracy, and we believe that defending democracy doesn’t start or stop at the ballot box. Our grantees are community builders, voter educators, and grassroots organizers, working year-round to advance racial, gender, and economic justice. Groups like ProGeorgia and the Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable are making strides to ensure that historically underrepresented communities have a voice—not just in this election year, but every year. As funders, we understand that supporting civic engagement during election cycles is crucial—but so is supporting the infrastructure that keeps these movements thriving when the cameras are off. The fight for democracy is ongoing, and investing in community power is key to transformative change. Check out this article on the importance of pro-democracy funding by FJS CEO Nicky McIntyre USSE program officer Paulina Helm-Hernández. https://lnkd.in/gEMWM-Jp

The Power of Showing Up! In 2020, RCI Community Funds made a difference. We reached out to every registered Black voter in North Carolina—2.8 million postcards—and saw voter turnout soar to 160,000 in Mecklenburg County alone. But in 2022, North Carolina told us they had it covered, so we focused on Georgia instead. Without our engagement, Mecklenburg County’s turnout dropped to 97,000. The message was clear: our presence matters. In states like North Carolina and Georgia, where elections are often decided by just tens of thousands of votes, our impact can tip the scales. We’ve proven that showing up counts. We're committed to empowering communities and driving change where it’s needed most. Mecklenburg County, we hear you—and we’re ready to return. Let’s keep making an impact, together. #CommunityCapital #VoterEngagement #ImpactInvesting #RCICommunityFunds #Empowerment #TogetherForChange

The Center for Justice Innovation is driven by a singular idea: local communities are critical to transforming justice. We believe that the only way to truly create safe and flourishing neighborhoods is with a full-spectrum approach that runs from communities to systems and back again. We call that approach Community Justice. We’ve seen firsthand how courts, community members, service providers, researchers, and everyone in between can do more for their local communities when they work together. Whether it’s in big cities or small towns, communities with a long history of justice reforms or ones that are just getting started, we can build Community Justice with these five key action steps. ?? https://lnkd.in/eFJFyHgX

As pro-democracy funders and donors, how can we best show up for the organizations working to ensure our elections remain free and fair? This year, the call to action has never been more clear: grassroots leaders accomplish their best work when they have the resources and time necessary to plan their efforts confidently, develop robust partnerships, and invest in their employees. That’s why Tides’ Healthy Democracy Fund maximized opportunities for long-term power-building among historically excluded communities well before the start of this pivotal election year. ? Approximately 1 in 5 dollars that Tides granted in 2023 went toward organizations dedicated to protecting democracy, civic participation, or community organizing. This year, we’re taking it a step further by pledging to move all the democracy-protecting dollars we can before the end of April to best support changemakers on the ground.? ? We’re supporting important activities including: ?????????Community-informed, multi-issue organizing,? ?????????Advocacy to help our grantees educate voters and lead nonpartisan voter registration drives, and ?????????Increasing voter turnout by reaching across language and cultural barriers to inspire voters of all backgrounds. ? We are committed to shifting power to people of color, youth, low-income communities, and other groups who face systemic barriers. “Citizenship is a lifetime project and we must continuously combat novel misinformation tactics while educating and protecting vulnerable communities.” Gabriel Marmentini, PhD, cofounder and CEO of Politize! - Civic Education Institute (Brazil), and Jeanine Abrams McLean, PhD, president of Fair Count (United States), share strategies to help navigate and counteract false information and empower communities: #1 Using education (civic, democratic, and media) to strengthen information ecosystems ?? #2 Developing long-term civil society coalitions for fact-checking and community building ? #3: Conducting localized community engagement activities and amplify trusted voices to effectively identify and counter misinformation ??? “More than ever, we need to recognize, value, and support the work of civil society organizations. It is not about doing the work that the government should be doing. It is about recognizing that the government will never be able to solve all the problems alone and that it is our civic responsibility to get involved in the public arena in order to be part of the construction of the solutions we would like to see.” ?? Here is a good question and appropriate priority - how to ensure elections are free and fair. It's not a simple one to answer, but the thrust here is organizing, organizing, organizing. It is a titanic David and Goliath story: how to wrest power and democratic decency from the forces bent on protecting the power of those elites that control capital
