On February 2, we held our first DEI Essentials: Unconscious Bias and Behaviour training for New World Development Company Limited! ?? With a room filled with engaged participants, questions, scenarios and ways we can do better, we went deeper into unconscious biases, privilege, identity and what we can do about it to foster more inclusion, innovation and a sense of belonging. A big thanks to #NWD, Sustainability and Human Resources teams, M?nica Zionede Hall (she/her) for coming together in this meaningful training workshop! ?????????? ?? DEI correlates with better business results, more innovation, higher employee engagement & retention. ??Most recently, consulting DDI’s 2023 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Report indicated that companies with above-average diversity are 2.4 times more likely to outperform their peers financially. ?? DEI is not only the right thing to do, but it is also good for business. Next week I'm hosting Eryc Eyl in a conversation discussing "How to make work more human." Honestly we could have recorded our pre-planning meeting cause it was so fun and a few hot takes as we were just talking about what we were going to talk about! As a manager of a fully remote team, I make sure to focus on even small things to ensure that the whole team knows that their contributions, skills and experience are valued no matter where they are located. - Camera off if even 1 person is having bandwidth issues. The digital divide and basic bandwidth availability are something I take seriously based on my days in EdTech. - Setting meeting times that are within agreed working hours or that everyone has mutually agreed to. - Starting with 2-3min of small talk. Knowing more about what the team values in life helps me know them as full humans better but also means I can build opportunity to align what they are passionate about to what they are doing on an everyday basis.
