Today marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month! Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This year’s theme focuses on “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.

Happy Juneteenth!!! Today, we commemorate a pivotal moment in American history—Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to deliver the news of freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day marks a profound moment of liberation and the beginning of a long journey toward equality and justice. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom, but a recognition of resilience, culture, and the enduring spirit of African American communities. It’s a day to honor the contributions, creativity, and strength of Black Americans throughout history and today. From the arts to sciences, from entrepreneurship to social justice, Black excellence continues to shape and inspire our nation. As we reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, let’s also commit to the ongoing work of promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in our workplaces and communities. Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom, a Reminder of Our Journey Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news of the Emancipation Proclamation, finally freeing the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederate states. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Black Americans. It is a day to honor and acknowledge their struggles and celebrate their contributions to the United States of America. It is a day to reflect on our history, both triumphs and injustices, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive society. Such an important day should remind us that diversity and inclusion are more than meeting hiring targets or checking boxes. They are about creating a workplace culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents. They are about recognizing and celebrating our differences while also finding common ground and building bridges of understanding. Celebrating cultural events like Juneteenth is an essential part of this process. It allows us to learn about different cultures, traditions, and histories and connect more deeply with our colleagues. While we celebrate Juneteenth as a milestone in our journey to equality, we must also acknowledge that the journey toward true equality and justice is far from over. Systemic racism and discrimination continue to plague our society, and we must all do our part to dismantle these barriers. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Emancipation #BlackHistory #DiversityAndInclusion #Equity #WorkplaceCulture #CulturalCelebration #EndSystemicRacism
