This year, Clean Energy Group celebrates 10-years and $2 million in small grant support to build local energy resilience in historically underserved communities through the Technical Assistance Fund (TAF). Over 150 community-serving organizations, representing 375 facilities across 33 states and territories, have received the early, individualized technical and small grant assistance they need to develop resilient power systems – solar photovoltaics paired with battery storage (solar+storage) – at community facilities. To date, with Clean Energy Group’s assistance, 77 solar+storage projects have been completed, and many more are in progress. Over 50 percent of 2024 TAF support has gone to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) led organizations. Read more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/ejD8zumV

Read about the Pew Energy Modernization Project's new bipartisan initiative to democratize energy production through distributed energy resources (DERs). Laura Lightbody and Tom Dillon write "The potential of DERs is vast, but there are many barriers for customers to access them and for widespread community adoption." Learn more about how this initiative will work to break down these barriers.
Pew is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at accelerating the deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) across the United States. DERs – like rooftop solar panels, energy storage systems, and microgrids - can empower communities to generate and manage their own energy, enhance grid resilience, and increase energy security. Joining Pew in this effort to democratize energy production are two respected energy sector leaders who have worked under democrat and republican leaders domestically and internationally: Audrey Zibelman and Pat Wood. Together we will develop a national roadmap that lays out how the nation can rapidly scale these vital energy resources. This effort is ambitious and will rely on partners to support the vision and implementation. Read more in the piece below co-authored with my colleague, Laura Lightbody. https://lnkd.in/eqA-qgT9

Blast off! This week The Pew Charitable Trusts is launching an initiative to rapidly accelerate the deployment of distributed energy sources (DERs) across the United States. DERs include rooftop solar panels, energy storage systems, and microgrids and can empower communities to generate and manage their own energy, enhance grid resilience, and increase energy security. They also offer a cost-effective, durable pathway to reducing carbon emissions; in fact, in one model, researchers looked at ways the U.S. could achieve at least a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and found that by using DERs, along with large-scale renewables, the country could save $109 billion. This bipartisan initiative will be led by energy pros Audrey Zibelman and Pat Wood, III —along with other industry and regulatory experts, equity- and community-centered organizations, and utility representatives— and will develop a roadmap on how the nation can rapidly accelerate the growth of DERs across the country. Read more in this piece authored alongside my colleague Tom Dillon. And special thanks to team behind this: Maureen Quinlan, Alexander McDonough, Brian Watts, Leah Ford. And by the way, Pew can't do this alone, so if you're interested in joining the effort, let us know!

We’re pleased to announce a new initiative to help democratize and modernize energy production in America. After all, as our Tom Dillon and Laura Lightbody write, "The U.S. cannot afford to rely on an electric grid that was built for the demands—and the weather—of last century." One way to move forward? Policies that boost the use of distributed energy resources (think solar panels and home batteries). When connected, they can make communities more resilient and energy independent, and save Americans billions in the transition to clean energy. And we couldn’t be in better company. Joining us in our push to rapidly accelerate the deployment of distributed energy sources are Audrey Zibelman, former chair of the New York State Public Service Commission, and Pat Wood, former chair of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. #cleanenergyfuture #sustainability #renewableenergy https://pew.org/4eJ5R6E

June 2024 at Reimagine Power has been a jam-packed month! To close out this month, here is some of what our team has been up to: RP has been paying close attention to the CA state budget, focusing on protecting funding that was previously allocated to the CEC for the Distributed Electricity Backup Assets (DEBA) Program, which will provide incentives for the deployment of new clean energy reliability projects across the state. The final budget passed last week with $75 million allocated to the two reliability reserve incentive programs (DSGS and DEBA) this fiscal year 2024, and authorizes greater spending flexibility at the CEC to ensure both programs maintain continuity in their implementation activities this year. We are thankful to have helped secure this funding allocation during an incredibly tough budget year and challenging state fiscal climate. Zoe Bennett, our Junior Policy Analyst, joined the RP Team in June, and got right to work, starting with DEBA as part of her onboarding and introduction to the vast clean energy policy landscape in California and beyond. Zoe has been studying up on the benefits of microgrids, including their various configurations and use cases for different customer segments. She is beginning to conduct market research and monitor DER regulatory activities across multiple markets in the west. Our Policy Analyst, Maia Adams, returned to Reimagine Power and the States from a semester abroad in Granada, Spain. She has begun monitoring changes to the state budget and critical bills affecting our clients and the future of clean energy. Igor Tregub, our Strategic Partnerships Director & Senior Policy Advisor, has been networking and coalition-building for a strong backing of SB 1374 (Becker), a bill that would recognize self-generated energy as a fundamental right. Igor has also been working with housing developers and raising awareness that if the bill were to be killed, it would negatively affect citizens’ ability to acquire solar for multimeter properties. Our Policy Manager, Allison Hilliard, spent June in the Swing Space/Capitol advocating for SB 1374 and discussing the importance of accurate accounting for onsite self-generation. She held multiple meetings with key offices to address any concerns and help ensure multifamily housing can install solar in a fiscally viable manner. SB 1374 passed out of Assembly Utilities and Energy yesterday evening. We look forward to continuing our advocacy with this bill! Allie Detrio, our Chief Strategist, was featured in an article by Microgrid Knowledge, where she was interviewed about SB 1374 and the commercial viability of microgrids and other DERs. Allie also participated in a podcast by VECKTA where the conversation revolved around questioning the continued use of outdated utility models. We are thrilled to see what’s in store for the rest of 2024. Make sure to follow our page to catch the latest of what the RP Team is up to! #ReimaginePower?

From the DG/Community Solar watch: At the RE+ conference, the U.S. Department of Energy announced the expansion of the National Community Solar Partnership, now rebranded as NCSP+. This enhanced program will extend its reach beyond community solar to include residential and distributed rooftop solar + storage and commercial solar projects, focusing on increasing access to affordable clean energy in low-income and disadvantaged communities. This initiative also includes a significant boost to the Community Power Accelerator, which will now connect solar + storage projects with investors and offer new tools and educational resources. Additionally, a concerted effort will be made to protect consumers from predatory practices in the rooftop solar industry through new partnerships with federal agencies. Expanding this program will certainly help us sustain and drive the nearly 500% growth in community solar over the past few years. Make power where it's needed. #CommunitySolar #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability

Community Solar projects spread clean energy benefits widely—even to those who can't afford or are unable to install rooftop solar panels. When Walmart wanted to get involved, they turned to CRC-IB, one of the nation's leading investment banks specializing in clean energy projects, to package together a deal. The result? A partnership announced this past December with Nexamp for 31 Community Solar projects spanning five states—Maine,?Massachusetts,?New York,?Illinois, and?Minnesota. Britta von Oesen, Partner and Managing Director at CRC-IB, joins Supercool this week to discuss: * Why corporations are increasingly financing clean energy projects * How financial innovation is accelerating deal flow * How these clean energy deals come together ???Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/guCEZwky ???Watch it on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eNAEMitR

The transition to a 100% carbon-free, clean energy future will require new business models, financial products, and partnerships that are either just emerging or don't even exist Today... That's why last week, I was delighted to join and speak at the first national conference for "Community Choice Aggregators" (aka CCA) put on by LEAN Energy US, a nonprofit?dedicated to the accelerated expansion and competitive success of clean energy CCA's nationwide. Participants exchanged best practices on renewable energy sourcing and marketing strategies, financing mechanisms, market and technology innovations beyond procurement, infrastructure and regulatory challenges, state and federal funding opportunities, and even community engagement. In addition, DOE welcomed the LEAN Energy leadership and some of the CCA members to meet with various DOE programs offices to shed light on new ways that CCA's can better interact and partner with DOE. My remarks focused on how the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is evolving and building out new teams and tools to support communities through the clean energy transition, as well as the importance of the CCA buisness model to reach the scale of decarbonization needed. As an example, DOE has been working to establish new capacity building programs, including Community Energy Fellowships, a new DOE-AmeriCorps partnership for Clean Energy Service Corps members, an Arctic Energy Ambassadors program. Starting in 2025, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), U.S. Department of Energy will also be enabling CCA's to be eligible for the Clean Energy Innovation Fellowships (CEIF) to support them with expanding new service offerings, expanding to new territory, and enhancing the value proposition of the CCA's. To me, CCA's offer communities a game-changing local energy model. It's essentially a shared-service model with investor-owned utilities that enables cities and counties to aggregate their electric load for the purpose of lowering electric rates, offering ratepayers a choice to buy clean energy, and by doing so, lowering greenhouse gas emissions. CCA's are also thinking about expanding beyond just providing choice of power, to also aggregating home #efficiency and #electrification technologies and solutions to reach economies of scale, especially when combined with the IRA home energy #rebates and new #taxcredits. This is where things can get really exciting in IMHO. Currently, CCA's are enabled in 10 states, with several others looking to vote on this in the upcoming elections, so stay tuned to see whether CCA's will be coming to your backyard. >>> https://lnkd.in/daXNZCkk A big thanks to Alison Elliott, Claire Dépit-Str?mb?ck, and the LEAN ENERGY US team for your great work in the field and for engaging with DOE while you were in town. #ENERGY #MarketTransofrmation #CCA #Community #InvestingInAmerica
