Could You Do This Job? A Reality Check! I recently saw a clip of a cockroach farmer managing what can only be described as a unique and mentally tough job. The process involves working in a multi-layered carton setup, shaking the tiers to send thousands of cockroaches scattering across the ground—a routine task for this line of work. This isn't just about "pest farming." Cockroach farms serve purposes like creating animal feed, aiding waste management, and even contributing to medicine. But imagine the nerves of steel and mental resilience required to face these crawling creatures every single day. In my opinion, this job might not be the toughest out there, but it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. For me, it would be a challenge to step into such an environment daily. While I respect the hard work of these individuals, I’m not sure I could handle the mental and emotional toll myself. What about you? Could you see yourself doing this job, or do you think it’s one of the toughest? Share your thoughts—let’s discuss! #ToughestJobs #UniqueCareer #CockroachFarming #RespectHardWork #ChallengingJobs #FarmLife #MentalStrength #BehindTheScenes #UnusualProfessions #InnovativeFarming

I am not a gardener. Clearly. Can you find the little rosemary plant among the weeds in my first-ever pea patch garden row? No? I’d been weeding by hand, nurturing my little seeds and the new plants… but in one week, the weeds just TOOK OVER. The entire row, all the different crops, allll the areas. I had thought nurturing the plants (my favorite part) would help them overcome the weeds, and I could just casually pick out the weeds (not my favorite part) while I watered, and all would be well. All was not well. MAJOR remediation was needed. 3 days, 3 hours per day, of hoeing. Blisters through my gloves. And I’m still not sure my little plants are going to make it. I may have been too late. The weeds were THRIVING, choking out the beneficial plants, which in turn are weak and poorly rooted. I may have to restart. This is what can happen in company cultures. Maybe the bad actors are top performers. Maybe you think if you nurture the rest of the team, they’ll thrive despite. Maybe you think it will be contained to one dept, one area. Manageable. —> Nope. And rest assured it affects your future crops as well. Do candidates for positions contact previous and current employees to find out the scoop? Oh yes. They do. And more than *anything,* finding out your company culture is built to shelter poor behavior? Hard pass. Even in difficult jobsearch times. Finding out you do the hard things to care for your people? Gold. Weeding sucks, and it’s hard. It’s also necessary. #companyculture #jobsatisfaction

Spoke with a concerned son-in-law the other day. His wife's dad is in his late 50's. Full-time job/helps his dad part-time on the farm. Never been paid for the farm work. "It's just what you do, you help on the farm when needed." The farmer, in his late 70's, decided this is his last year farming. Asked the FIL to take over next year as farm manager. FIL has had zero involvement with management or decision making. The concern: Minimal experience + years of strained relationship = will FIL even get paid? One suggestion I had... Rather than a "job" as farm manager, can FIL lease the land & equipment from farmer? Crop share, flex lease, or cash rent - at least FIL has some protections as he controls the $. *Note: this was a 10 minute phone call, so obviously don't know the full picture. What's your best "radio show" advice for FIL?

Introducing Kate Shooter, Agronomist, Toowoomba! After joining the team back in March, a quick chat on why she loves what she does and some top advice that she would have given herself when she was just starting out . Welcome to the team Kate ! Q. Where are you from ? A. I grew up on a family farm west of Allora which I am still apart of today. Together with my family we grow sorghum, wheat, barley and the occasional mungbeans. I studied Rural Science at the University of New England before moving to Jandowae to start my career. Q. What does your typical workday look like? A. My typical work day generally starts with quite a few phone calls to growers discussing their concerns and the paddocks they might like me to look at. From there I will go out and inspect paddocks which could be fallows or looking at crops for pests and diseases. I then follow up with the growers and plan any of the chemicals that they may need dropped back to farm to complete the job. I then make my way back to Toowoomba in time to organise any chemical/fertiliser or seed that I may have discussed with the client, load it up for delivery on my way home. Q. What do you enjoy most about your role? A. I enjoy getting to work with growers to help them come up with solutions that makes their business as profitable as it can be. Q. What do you enjoy about living and working in your town? A. I like living in this area because as a grower myself I am facing generally very similar challenges on my own farm that the growers I work with are. This gives me a better insight into what the grower is going through. Q. What 3 pieces of advice you would give your younger self? A. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions when you are starting out and listen to the answers with an open mind. Q. Don’t be afraid to talk to new growers. A. You will talk about the weather with multiple people every day of the week. Get used to looking at all of the different forecasts so you have an idea of what the weather is doing. When your first grower calls you will know exactly what they are talking about. #careerpathways #agcareers #mcgregorgourlay #buylocal #australianowned #localag
