// SUSTAINABLE MEDIA IRELAND - Part 2 // More soundbites to inspire and provoke from yesterday's Sustainable Media Ireland’s event, focused on Climate Action and a New Political Cycle: the media’s role in a time of change. Following on from the riveting interview with Mary Robinson, in conversation with Sinead Crowley, @Colette Fitzpatrick Virgin Media Ireland moderated an insightful, engaging panel with Environmental Correspondent Caroline O'Doherty , Green MEP Ciarán Cuffe, Content Creator Shannen Healy @GreenGal and Clean Futures Professor at UCC, Paul Deane. Ciarán Cuffe ?? If we want to go down the road of ‘Drill baby drill” we’re all headed for “burn baby burn”.? ?? Business stories of ‘degrowth’ can be rephrased around a discussion on sufficiency. Caroline O'Doherty ?? We’re so used to asking ‘how much is this going to ask?' We need to also ask, ‘what is the climate cost’? Or ‘is it climate resilient?’ The more we ask questions the more we build momentum. ?? Advertising can be subtle not breaking any Green Claims, but nonetheless pointing us in the wrong direction, like a current car ad that suggests ‘you get the car you want versus the car you think you should *drive’. (*EV). Paul Deane ?? We are one of the most fossil fuel reliant economies - €1 million every hour is spent on fossil fuels.??? ?? For every €1000 we spend on heating our homes, it’s likely that €600 is leaving due to lack of insulation.??? ?? We over emphasise the negativity of doing anything versus the positivity of doing something.? ?? Words matter. How we frame stories matter. Landing your point (story, grant application etc.) can often happen with no mention of climate. Our local stories of climate action can be rooted in stories of wellbeing - what’s good for people is inevitably good for planet.? ?? We need to be honest. People are sceptical of an easy, breezy future. The change is have to make is hard BUT it’s worthwhile. It won’t solve all our problems but it will make our lives better. Shannen Healy @GreenGal ?? There is a culture where it can feel like we don’t have to care about things as we have money and access to buy so many new things, but we need to move to a space of caring - repairing, recycling, up-cycling etc.? ?? People want the 'how to' info for some simply things - like bleeding rads in a rented house (note: 11 million views on Shannen's vid!) Dr Rob Mooney, Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications "People are switching off and want to learn by doing. There is a difference telling people what to do versus showing them what could be done." Nicky Coghlan, Producer of Ecolution Podcast at RTE "Kids hear other kids voices and they perk up. Stories need to be relatable." David Robbins quoting Wolfgang Bleu, “What’s the best way to improve climate change coverage in media orgs?” Give staff training and then ask them to give their ideas. Thanks for these insights Claire Hyland. It sounds like a fantastic event. Ciarán Cuffe's point on sufficiency and Shannen Healy's recycling, repairing and up-cycling reminder are key. The advertising and media industries play an important role, along with those who employ them. When is enough growth/"stuff", enough...
