Today is International Men’s Day – a day to highlight struggles and challenges that men face. In the high stress construction industry, there are many that silently suffer from mental health issues. Often times, men are too proud to seek out help for fear of being seen as weak or less than. For far too long, mental health struggles have escalated and made suicide a leading cause of death among working age adults in the US. I am proud to work for Mascaro Construction Company, LP. – a company that prioritizes mental health for workers and partners with organizations to get resources to employees when they need it. Today, I urge other safety professionals, managers, and people to check in on your workers and co-workers. Make this a daily habit. October 10th has been designated as World Mental Health Day. This years theme: “It Is Time To Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace." Raising awareness about mental health issues is just the tip of the iceberg, promoting supportive action is needed through out the workplace, especially in the construction world. High pressure and physical demands are some of the elements that directly affect ones mental health factors associated with our industry. Creating a safety culture requires going above standards and implementing decisive actions for supporting mental health in the workplace.
