In last night’s NBA broadcast, during the conference finals, the Dallas Mavericks faced off against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The commentators mentioned that LeBron James had tweeted at the moment the Dallas coach called for a CHALLENGE, complaining that there should be more than two allowed. Previously, only one was allowed. Now, if the challenge is successful, a second is permitted. If the complaint were valid, when would a coach stop requesting challenges? How long would the games last? If someone takes the time, the pleasurable work, to watch a few minutes of the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls game and sees the fierce, unarbitrated play, with no possibility of overturning a decision, one can see how the game has changed. In various aspects, namely: 1. Currently, almost every foul is called; 2. Decisions can be reversed; 3. The intensity of the game is halted by the waiting required for the challenge review; 4. Players, coaches, and spectators can see themselves on the screen, which increases screen time. There are more, but these four allow us to consider how the sensitivity of the rules has evolved. (Here, at the risk of being judged prejudiced, NBA players, like soccer players, are as or more concerned about the color of their sneakers and their hairstyles than about virtue and discipline). It is fundamental to reflect that this modification of the sport (would you call it evolution?) occurs at the same time that instant broadcast allows for ever greater immediacy. That is, it keeps pace with technological possibilities and the increase in screens. From the NBA star, LeBron James, in a tweet that is read live on air about something happening in the game moment, to the viewer watching a game on television and learning what the star says. How fast does information travel? Or put another way, how much information invades each connected human being? It may be fascinating, more evolved. It is. But what more does this speed and invasive nature of immediacy mean for the psyche? It no longer surprises anyone to see 8 out of 10 people on public transport using a phone. But we should be surprised that we are observing this situation with a sense of surprise.
