Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has allocated funding for 21 organizations to open or expand childcare centers this year, aiming to add 2,241 new childcare slots. The state confronts challenges including a provider shortage, high costs for families, and a scarcity of workers. With the end of pandemic-era social supports, many Americans are struggling to afford the #childcare that they need for caregivers and children alike to thrive. The good news? Across the country, states are stepping up with innovative solutions to bring childcare costs down. From reallocating oil and gas revenues to fund early childhood initiatives in New Mexico, to lowering daycare fees for parents who work in the childcare industry in Kentucky, states are finding creative ways to ensure more families have access to childcare programs. These are exciting solutions to see, but we still need federal investment in childcare for families in every state! https://lnkd.in/d87Bs3aQ

The need for affordable childcare has become increasingly evident. It is inequitable for the cost of childcare to be comparable to housing expenses. Furthermore, while government support for childcare is substantial, the technological infrastructure of many childcare assistance programs remains outdated. For those in my network seeking to improve childcare administration, I would be delighted to discuss how Beam is working to alleviate this administrative burden. This, in turn, will empower governments and community-based organizations (CBOs) to maximize their impact.
Big day! The Administration has finalized their #childcare regulation. Many families will see lower child care prices and ECE providers will see system improvements - great news! States will start planning for implementation soon. Learn more --> https://lnkd.in/e--QDyAz

I am honored to be a board member for NC Child, the voice of North Carolina's children. Here is a great example of their work... If you've followed me for long, then you know that I'm passionate about supporting our caregivers in the workplace. The following report outlines the ?? economic impact ?? of declining childcare options in our state. What can employers do? Here's your checklist: ? Identify how many caregivers are employed with you ? Ask your caregiving employees what support they need to do their jobs well (Examples might include flexible schedules, tax-deductible dependent care plan, hybrid or remote work option) ? Review employee feedback and act accordingly ? Stay updated on the caregiving situations in the locations of your employees (Ex. childcare, day treatment, senior centers) Additionally, you can fund caregiving needs in your community and advocate for increased funding where possible. And of course, vote. Follow NC Child for regular updates. They are an amazing group. #northcarolina #voiceforchildren #ncchildcarecrisis #nccaregivers

Thanks Early Learning Nation for featuring the report Laura Valle-Gutierrez and I wrote for The Century Foundation and digging in deeper with me about what it all means. Rebecca Gale asked some great questions! ie. Gale: You’ve been researching and working on social policy for the better part of two decades, yet it took the Covid-19 pandemic to finally give child care its moment in the sun. As we move further away from the emergency lockdown phase of Covid, how do you think people will remember this time in our country’s evolution on public policy? Do you see this as a turning point? Kashen:?The turning point is that (1) people saw clearly the value of caregiving; (2) the government took historic action that worked and we can now point to as evidence of the value of these investments. More here:
Federal funding via the American Rescue Plan was crucial to the stabilization of the #childcare sector... and then bipartisan support dried up. Now, 11 states and the District of Columbia have taken concrete steps to shore up their own child care sectors, and a new report by The Century Foundation goes into detail about these states' work, providing blueprints for others, and potentially the federal government again someday. Director of Public Affairs at Government Strategies Group - the top lobbying and public affairs firm in SW Ohio. Member of Leadership Cincinnati Class 47!
Childcare has been in crisis since my kids were born! I remember the cost our two boys just about matched my salary, and it was hard to find. Nothing has changed. As this piece by Jill Miller at bi3 and Shannon Jones at Groundwork Ohio points out, "...child care in Ohio is both unaffordable and insufficient. Child care is?often the biggest expense?for a family with young children, compared to other household expenses. A family with an infant and a preschooler in center-based care can end up paying more for child care than for housing. The cost of infant care is especially frightening, accounting for nearly 40% of the income of a single-parent family. Furthermore,?30% of Ohioans live in "child care deserts,"?areas with a severe shortage of licensed child care slots, more than half of which are in rural areas. This scarcity of quality, affordable child care contributes significantly to the workforce shortages Ohio businesses face. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports almost 60% of parents leave the workforce due to inadequate child care options." Great ideas in this article for how businesses can update their workplace practices to help employees and invest in solutions. https://lnkd.in/gaEiFDhf
