Last summer, I answered the phone one afternoon to hear John Dearman's voice on the other end of the line. He was 92 years old at the time and had written a memoir for which he needed a copyeditor. I'll never forget that conversation. Even as we spoke, I recognized what a privilege it was to talk with someone who'd grown up as a Texas sharecropper, someone who had been active in the civil rights movement and who became one of the first Black judges in San Francisco. Before that conversation, those things felt more distant to me—the stuff of history books, not living memory. (Especially the post-Civil War sharecropping.) Talking to John Dearman, and then copyediting his memoir, was a powerful reminder that these events are uncomfortably close to the present. His story is fascinating, and this afternoon, I was excited to discover that he published his book in February. Somehow, I missed the memo when it first came out, so I'm posting about it now. Better late than never, right? Anyway, check it out—especially if, like me, you forget just how little time has passed since slavery, since sharecropping, since Martin Luther King, since the advent of anti-discrimination laws. It's a fascinating read. . . . . . . #copyedit #copyeditor #editing #edit #editor #memoir #lawyer #judge #blacklives #blackexcellence

This is an important article for two reasons - first, because libraries in general are under massive threat, but also because Rodney talks about being a Black librarian. Black librarians are a tiny percent of our profession.* We have to do better, and we can't do better without knowing the facts. Read my comment for one set of resources to help libraries under threat. Follow Rodney Edward Freeman Jr. to learn more about Black librarians. ("In 2022, only 4.3 percent of librarians identified as Black or African American, a steep decline from 9.5 percent in 2020." https://lnkd.in/eUrBdk-j)
It's National Librarian's Day, huge your librarian, and please check out our article in Newsweek. https://lnkd.in/eZbnxegh
