City budgets might seem overwhelming with their complex terms in big numbers, but think of it as simple arithmetic. Once you understand the basics, everything else falls into place. A budget is a balancing act. It aligns our desires with available resources. A city budget does four key things. One, it captures the city's priorities. Essential services usually get the most funding. 2 It shows where the money. Comes from and how it's spent. Three, it outlines how services will be provided for, and it communicates vital information to the City Council and residents like you. Unlike a personal budget, the city operates on a fiscal year from July 1st to June 30th. The budget process takes about five months, starting in January. The Budget Office works with the departments to establish needs for the coming year. Departments incorporate feedback from the community and prioritize requests based on needs within their service responsibility. In spring, departments refine their requests with feedback from budget staff on available revenue. Department proposals are discussed with the City Manager, who is responsible for recommending a budget package to the City Council. In May and June, the proposed budget is presented to the City Council. This is where you come in. Share your feedback through public meetings, online surveys, City Council meetings.
