?? On a rainy morning, the city of Stamford took a significant leap into the future with the opening of its new garage at the Stewart B. McKinney Transportation Center. This $100 million project is not just a garage, but a symbol of progress and modernization. With 914 parking spaces, 92 electric vehicle charging stations, 120 bike stations, and 50 electric bike charging stations, this garage is equipped to meet the needs of the 21st century. The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured prominent figures such as Governor Ned Lamont and Congressman Jim Himes, who emphasized the importance of this development not only as infrastructure but as an economic hub for Stamford. This project promises to revitalize the area with commercial spaces, possibly housing, and become an activity core that will draw more people to the region. The new garage, adorned with undulating shapes and LED lights that shone in the colors of the Connecticut flag, also features a 320-foot pedestrian bridge that directly connects to the Stamford station, facilitating access and enhancing the experience for the more than 28,000 daily commuters. King George Station in Surrey’s now-bustling city centre has been the last stop on SkyTrain’s Expo Line since the station opened in 1994, reported The Vancouver Sun. "The line’s tracks though run a hundred metres or so beyond the station?and end abruptly over a patch of green space, next to an abandoned strip mall that housed an appliance store, pharmacy and Sri Lankan grocer, hinting at future ambitions for expansion. If things go to plan, that future will start in 2024." "B.C.’s Transportation Investment Corp. is finalizing bids to start construction on a $4 billion, 16-kilometre, aboveground extension of the Expo Line along Fraser Highway, past parks, strip malls, car dealerships, trailer parks and Agricultural Land Reserve lands to a new terminus at 203rd Street in the City of Langley." A sports arena, medical center and luxury apartments are some developments that people will soon find in Lake County. Developers are making progress on a massive project that could make the city of Clermont a destination. Clermont is considered a choice of champions, serving as a training ground for Olympic athletes in the United States. Olympus, a community development district that's under construction, hopes to elevate the city's status. "Where you can walk down from your residence and get a bite to eat, then go check out a sports competition," Dan Wilson said, who leads sales and capital advisory at First Capital Property Group. Wilson's team is the exclusive listing agent for tenants coming to Olympus Town Center. The 243-acre district will combine sports, wellness, entertainment and housing. The city approved the project one year before COVID-19 caused construction delays, but crews are making strides. A timeline for the Olympus construction is not finalized yet. Converting the elevated right-of-way portions of Line 3 into an iconic linear public park and mobility space could be incredible. This could be monumental to the citizens of Toronto and Scarborough. This park could also help make Toronto hit our climate goals and improve our city! Scarborough residents have the longest TTC commutes, the least amount of biking infrastructure and the highest rates of pedestrian deaths in the City; a safe elevated route would really help. This linear park could help residents to gain safely and conveniently expanded year-round access to jobs, affordable housing options, culture and entertainment, shopping, green space and other neighbourhoods along the existing corridor. Improved connections and use of adaptive reuse of buildings and assets would be instrumental in the future of our cities. Look no further than Friends of the High Line who have made a linear park a economic driver of NYC.

"The “Imagine Scott Road Visioning Study” provides the planning framework to guide the long-term development of an L-shaped area in the northwest corner of Surrey, along the Surrey side of Scott Road and along 72 Avenue." "This 8.4 sq km area is?anchored by TransLink’s new R6 RapidBus route, which runs along Scott Road/120 Street and 72 Avenue between SkyTrain Scott Road Station and the Newton bus exchange. The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) ,in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Hollywood, Florida, recently completed the Complete Streets Demonstration project along Hollywood Blvd.? This collaborative effort builds upon the vision set by the Broward MPO’s Complete Streets Initiative.?This transformative project included the following elements: 12’ sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, transit amenities, pedestrian lighting, refuge islands, mast arms, landscaping and mid-block crossings. Since the completion of the project, the corridor has seen overall improvements in metrics utilized to measure success.??Crashes have been reduced by 50%, bike and pedestrian activity has increased by 47%, and vehicular speeds have been lowered by 10%.?In addition, redevelopment has increased in the corridor. Old to Leeds, new to UKREiiF... I know Leeds well. I was born in Dewsbury and brought up opposite the Leeds United ground, so an itinerant Leeds supporter. I was fortunate to be able to stay with family, as the hotels were full. Some 13,000 descended on the city, phenomenal! #UKREiiF itself is a busy, slightly chaotic arrangement of tents and stalls, bewildering for the first time - as is arriving in Leeds, with the station in dire need of improvement. There were interesting discussions on timber construction, heat pumps, EV charging, offshore power, transport, housing and how to encourage the workforce to reconvene in the office. One thing that became clear as I listened, walked and talked to people is the lack of funding decisions for big projects. Whether this is because of uncertain times or high interest rates is unclear. I took to my Brompton and did the cycle tour of Leeds I had been planning with the help of a map created with Sarah Simpkin, visiting buildings while the sun was out – glorious! But as a consequence, I missed an art trail I had planned to join with Ailish Killilea of the Townscape Consultancy. The trail, I caught up with later, included Hibiscus Rising: Creating a memorial for David Oluwale with Yinka Shonibare RA CBE. Set against a grey-blue sky, surrounded by archetypal red-brick buildings, it is one of the most striking public artworks. There was rain. Seeking refuge, I signed up for a Perfect Circle event, suggested by Mike Hutt. In London at least, transport infrastructure seems to be self-propagating with development. Southwark and Lewisham gave an impassioned session on #BacktheBakerloo. Interesting how the line first came about, promoted by an American financier. It was established in 1893, tunnelling commenced in 1898, some 5 years later. Perhaps a clue as where to seek financing. Extending the Bakerloo as proposed will require 14 new stations – that’s 14 opportunities for diverse, locally relevant designs. It occurs to me that the older tube lines are becoming the local lines, feeding the communities, and the RIBA Award-winning Elizabeth Line has taken the mantle as London’s new main artery.What a great thing this is to celebrate, let’s do more like it. Roger Madelin, ever the pragmatist, pointed out that a cost to build in the region of ￡1000-per-sqm makes social housing almost impossible for developers, hence why they often appear to be pushing the massing. We need more subsidies/investment in social housing and infrastructure. Maybe we pay more tax to pay for housing – and stop selling it off? Returning home, I was struck by a massive screen in the station: ‘Made in the UK, sold to the world’ with architect, Simone de Gale. I know Simone and great to see her face up there – a fitting point to end on. Perhaps our fortunes do lie more overseas while we have such little funding within our own economy. Then the PM calls an election as I cycle home to Spitalfields. A change is a good thing…
