I swapped my heels?? for boots ??and spent time onsite this week. The humidity was high, and drilling work was underway. The dedication of the electrical crew was evident—drenched shirts and dirt-covered faces. The insights gained from a few hours in the field far surpass days in the office. In this industry, I firmly believe: ? You must see the work firsthand. ? Be with the people who do the work. ? Put on your hard hat, ask questions, and LISTEN. ? Show empathy to demonstrate you care. ? Work on practical solutions. ? Recognize safe conditions. ? Discuss areas for improvement. Having meaningful conversations about the work and, more importantly, about the workers as people is crucial. Ultimately, the construction industry is a people business. Guessing game with some information! “Last week, I had the opportunity to walk the track within a rail yard to demonstrate my Universal Track Gauge Handle. On this particular day, the yard was out of service (OTS), with derails on both sides of the walking area. I was accompanied by a supervisor and a track inspector, and as always, I’m happy to discuss railroad maintenance and any track-related issues—because I care and enjoy sharing what I know to help others! As we walked through the yard, we came across something that caught their attention: the number 2 switch had a left-hand chipped point. The supervisor and track inspector both asked, ‘If the gauge and cross level are good, why is there a chipped point?’ Now, here’s where you get to join in! It’s time for another guessing game! [CASE STUDY] Konecranes port equipment is built to last. But even the sturdiest components eventually wear down. The drives, ropes, and motors that power the all-important hoist mechanisms are systems that, when replaced with modern equivalents, can increase the lifetime of the crane by many years and ensure spare parts remain available. Konecranes partnered with Archer Daniels Midland ( ADM) at their transshipment hub on the Mississippi River. One of ADM’s seven Konecranes Gottwald barge cranes was retrofitted with an all-new 4-rope drive, and several other key electronic and navigational components were upgraded. As the first ever 4-rope drive retrofit, this was an excellent proof of concept and demonstrates Konecranes' resolve to improve customer operations through equipment expertise.
