ICYMI | As colleges and universities across the western Carolinas start the cleanup from Hurricane Helene, administrators say a full recovery will take not just days or weeks, but months and possibly even years. Still, they remain confident that their institutions will be able to provide the required number of instruction hours, meet accreditation standards and complete the term. “After any disaster, some of the most trying moments come when shock turns to exhaustion, and the outside attention seems to fade,” University of North Carolina system president Peter Hans told Inside Higher Ed. “But every campus plans to resume instruction as soon as the basic infrastructure is restored … The bottom line is we will resume classes and finish the semester.” Photos and videos from campus communications teams and local journalists show lecture halls filled with water instead of students; fallen trees and power lines block many campus entryways. Most institutions, however, have reported minimal structural damage, saying that though campus centers may need new carpets and furniture, their buildings’ infrastructure remains sound. 3 dismal words: call for sites. Why do we run local plans like this? Why don't we set a strategy and parameters before calling for sites? Here, for example, you would know as an officer that the A120 between Braintree and Marks Tey is over capacity already and that Highways England has a block on new road accesses to it because it's such a dangerous road (two crashes this week alone). You'd therefore set parameters that state you are not accepting site submissions along this route. And maybe you'd have a district-wide strategy of increasing rural public transport or building new cycle tracks. So you'd ask submitters to state how they can contribute to this goal. Setting advance parameters would save planning officers a huge amount of time, too, so why stick to a system that encourages all landowners to jump on the bandwagon? It is hardly surprising that residents react badly when they see a map like this. (The blank bit in the middle is for quarries) The call for sites process is the most dismal and un-strategic process for deciding how a district should grow. How do we change it?

Boards of Trustees do such valuable work and all unpaid in our schools. However, they need to understand their responsibilities and the risks involved, particularly critical risks in the education space. EOTC is close to, if not at the top of that list. ? What are the triggers/indicators for GO-GO WITH CAUTION and NO GO, what actions must be undertaken resulting and who is responsible for what? ?? Keep it Simple = as part of your EOTC plan, make sure you have a simple 1 to 2 page trigger action response plan (so its easy to read and understand) that states just that. Make sure you are formerly monitoring and measure the effectiveness of implementation. Some examples of where this is done really well are commercial rafting, underground tunneling, mining and earthquake building reconstruction. https://lnkd.in/gvSPfzBM

In light of recent local informal civic discussions; I do believe that we as a Emergency Management community need to do a better job of providing awareness and education on the National Response Framework at the local level? https://lnkd.in/eGUahDnU

PROTECTING OUR SCHOOLS: IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, DO SOMETHING The protection of our school’s property is not just an obligation; it is a collective responsibility that reflects our values and commitment to creating a conducive learning environment. Schools are more than just buildings; they are places where futures are shaped, dreams are nurtured, and communities come together for growth and development. Caring for our school’s property is a duty we all share—students, teachers, parents, and the entire community. When we protect and respect these facilities, we preserve resources for future generations and contribute to a better, more sustainable environment for learning. Every desk, window, and piece of equipment is a testament to the investments made in education, and it is our duty to ensure they remain intact. Vandalism threatens this shared vision. Acts of vandalism not only destroy property but also disrupt the educational process and demoralize the school community. By saying no to vandalism, we demonstrate integrity, accountability, and respect for the resources provided for our collective benefit. Let’s unite as a community to protect what belongs to us all. Together, we can ensure that our schools remain safe, inspiring, and well-equipped for generations to come. Every small effort to safeguard our facilities is a step toward upholding the values of care, pride, and responsibility. Protecting our school’s property is more than just maintenance—it’s an act of commitment to education, progress, and the future. Join the movement: say no to vandalism and take pride in preserving our shared legacy.

Pastoral Pegs in a Moving Landscape In the process of pitching a tent, the pegs may seem small, almost insignificant. Yet, without them, the entire structure collapses. Schools are no different. Each member of our staff body — no matter their role — is a pastoral peg, holding up systems that provide support, rest, and stability for students who need it most. It’s easy to overlook the impact of our work when the landscape keeps shifting. Exams, assessments, events, meetings and other pressures can create dynamic shifts. But even the smallest actions anchor the systems that create safety, space, and opportunity for growth. So, be that pastoral peg. Hold the tent up. For every young person seeking shelter, trust, and care — you make the difference. Small but vital. Quiet but strong. Impactful but often unseen.
