And here we have a 2024-massive-car-park-fire, further extending the list of large fires in previous years... This one is exactly what we got few years ago in Warsaw, horrible. And I am tired of reiterating the same points and observations again and again and again. Let me try to make them concise: ? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ???????????????? and faster fire spread between vehicles, and if the active systems are lacking (no sprinklers, no smoke control, no detection), it may lead to catastrophic outcomes [note - I have no idea if those systems were present or not, but I am capable of taking an educated guess on this :)] ? ???? ???????????? ?????? ???????????? the possibility of losing a large residential building due to a car park fire underneath it. Cost reduction in residential development is driving fire safety choices, often cutting on protection means. Fires are rare. Fires are not that big, right? ? ????????????-?????????????? ?????????? that were managed by the fire brigade and only caused damage to neighbouring cars are a prevalent scenario in the statistics, but if the circumstances are right - the fire may cascade beyond size that is possible to control. Why? Cars are a perfect fuel source due to their plastic content, and enclosed well-ventilated space is perfect to support burning.??This process may be violent if there are no passive means (height) or active means (smoke control, sprinklers) to reduce the heat feedback. ? ?????? ???????????????????? does not matter that much. When the fire grows to the size of multiple vehicles, there is no difference if there is an EV, PHEV or ICEV in there. My thoughts are with the families who's homes are in danger now. In Warsaw, the building was miraculously saved despite the massive damage. I hope this will be the case in here as well. San Francisco voters are currently debating whether to limit private vehicle access on the Great Highway, a popular beachfront road. This discussion is raising questions about the users and purposes of car-free spaces. In 2022, residents voted to permanently restrict private vehicles on part of John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley and an intern at the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, I conducted a study to answer these questions about car-free spaces by analyzing how JFK Promenade is used. The Promenade provides a safe and reliable path for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting an active lifestyle among city residents. At its peak, JFK Promenade sees an average of 25 users per minute. It is also one of the safest places for walking, running, rolling, or cycling, with fewer than 3% of users experiencing safety incidents with other pedestrians. Additionally, the Promenade serves as a vital transportation route, with cyclists comprising over half of its users. For more detailed findings, check out the full report! https://lnkd.in/ghHwdmWV
