Last week I went to Lake Lure, NC to document some of the destruction that happened. If you go in person, you'll understand why I said in the video that I posted yesterday that the damage is unimaginable. Roads completely washed out. Buildings leveled. Bridges destroyed. Boats and debris blocking main roads. Take this time to get better prepared for the next possible emergency: - Develop and review your emergency action plans. - Conduct training and drills (especially on emergency equipment like fire extinguishers and first aid supplies). - Identify and mitigate workplace hazards (utilize your internal safety team or hire a consultant, like American Health & Safety) - Establish communication protocols. - Equip the workplace with emergency supplies. - Standardize evacuation routes and safe areas. - Build out maps that highlight emergency equipment like spill kits or FA kits. - Collaborate with local emergency services. Use the fire department and police to help you identify gaps and train with them. - Promote a safety culture and develop a robust health and safety plan.

Safety is not an intellectual exercise to keep us in work. It is a matter of life and death. It is the sum of our individual contributions to safety management that determines whether the people we work with live or die." – Sir Brian Appleton, Safety Advisor and Expert Witness to the Piper Alpha Disaster Inquiry. #BehavioralSafety #SafetyFirst #SafetyCulture #EveryoneIsResponsible

While reading this there is a lot of "Well no sh*t" thoughts. The painful one to read is Illinois OSHA stating firefighters should "Enter with their team, stay together and exit together." - This is something that is supposed to be ingrained into fire department/emergency response team. However, what this does go to show is just how overwhelming incidents can be for all involved. Even highly trained and busy departments like Chicago Fire team members can make mistakes. Even experienced incident commanders can make mistakes. All we can do is train, train, train, and more training. https://lnkd.in/gPnCKuBg

I may have upset a few people... A few weeks ago, I shared a video discussing diversity among fire risk assessors. It was based on the Home Office survey showing that 92% of assessors are male, predominantly over 50, and most come from an ex-fire service background. For me, this raised important questions about the future of fire safety. However, I’ve received a few angry messages asking me to explain why I believe this is an issue and so I wanted to clarify my thoughts. This isn’t about criticising individuals or groups—it’s about addressing broader challenges that could impact the industry in the future: - Talent Shortages: Without attracting new professionals into the field, we risk a future where there aren’t enough assessors to meet demand, potentially compromising safety. - Diversity of Thought: A workforce with varied backgrounds brings different perspectives, fostering creative and effective solutions to the complex challenges fire safety professionals face. Fire safety is about solving problems, not just ticking boxes. A more inclusive profession ensures we’re better equipped to adapt, innovate, and meet future needs. But these are just my thoughts and I am happy to be corrected. How can we attract and retain new talent in fire safety, especially from underrepresented groups? Let’s discuss this constructively and find solutions together. https://lnkd.in/emXCp85C

The Factory Fire It was a typical Monday morning at the John Smith Manufacturing plant in Calabar. Employees were busy with their daily tasks when suddenly, a loud explosion shook the building. A spark in the welding department had ignited flammable chemicals, spreading flames rapidly. The production supervisor, Smart, quickly sprang into action. He activated the emergency alarm and alerted the plant's emergency response team (ERT). "Evacuate the building immediately!" he yelled. ERT members, trained for situations like this, swiftly guided employees out of the building. They ensured everyone was accounted for, while others used fire extinguishers to contain the blaze. Medical responders provided care to those injured. Meanwhile, Smart called the State Emergency number. "We have a factory fire at John Smith Manufacturing. Please send emergency services immediately!" Within minutes, local fire departments and paramedics arrived. Firefighters battled the blaze, while paramedics treated injured employees. Thanks to John Smith Manufacturing's well-planned emergency response, all 250 employees were evacuated safely. Firefighters contained the blaze within 30 minutes, and only five employees sustained minor injuries. Production resumed within 48 hours. The investigation revealed that a faulty welding machine had caused the spark. John Smith Manufacturing took immediate action, implementing additional safety measures, including enhanced ventilation and regular equipment inspections. The company recognized and rewarded ERT members for their bravery. Smart, reflecting on the incident, said, "Our emergency response plan saved lives today. I'm proud of our team's preparedness and swift action." In the aftermath, John Smith Manufacturing conducted regular emergency drills, ensuring employees remained vigilant and prepared for any future incidents. The factory fire served as a stark reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and swift response. NB: Employees attitude and response during an emergency can be measured by their response during emergency drills. #IAMASAFETYCHAMPION
