We're super proud of our Public Works maintenance staff for this one: Earlier this year, our they found carefully preserved road signs proclaiming “City of Overland Park: Home of Miss America 1966, Debbie Bryant” that had been sitting in storage for nearly five decades. The team tracked Kansas’s first Miss America down and returned this special piece of history to Overland Park royalty. ?? “Overland Park will always be home,” Debbie shared. “It’s a point of pride. I can’t think of any better place to come from.” Listen to her story as she reconnects with a piece of her past. Read more about rediscovery of these historic signs at https://bit.ly/3Z7r5qe.

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of September 11th. On this day and every day, we honor victims, survivors and heroes. We are also reminded of our resilience, determination and how proud we are to call ourselves New Yorkers. Our city has emerged stronger and more unified than ever before and we will never forget what brought us here. #NeverForget _________________________ Via Instagram: @wtc_memories

Every judge & district attorney need to listen long & hard.
Detective Jonathan Diller and his wife, Stephanie, were soulmates — a cop and nurse bonded by their dedication to helping those in need and their love of life and one another. Jonathan was truly one of New York’s Finest admired by so many as seen by the sea of blue that lined the street outside the church. Surrounded by thousands of brave men and women in attendance, Stephanie showed that courage was just one more thing she had in common with her husband.

How I Spent #Juneteenth. As organizations still wrestle with the concept of #Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging in the workplace, I traveled back to my old duty station at Fort Monroe, Old Point Comfort Virginia, where slavery began in the United States. Here, in 1619, the White Lion, an English Privateer landed. The colonists traded food for “20” and “odd” Africans that the White Lion had captured from a Portuguese slave ship. I actually lived 3 years at the very spot where the first Africans landed while I was stationed at Fort Monroe, during 1991-1994. https://fortmonroe.org/ Fort Monroe is no longer a military installation. Fort Monroe was on the 2005 base realignment and closure list approved by President Bush. It was designated a national monument in 2011 by President Obama. Until the last five years, history books taught that the first enslaved Africans, in what is the United States, landed at Jamestown, one year before Plymouth Rock, thus the significance of where I lived was unknown to me, during the time I was stationed at Fort Monroe. In addition, the beginning of the end of slavery also began at Fort Monroe as those who escaped from slavery were no longer returned and were considered “Contraband.” A General Butler at Fort Monroe refused to return three runaway enslaved men. “Congress registered its approval of Butler’s policy when it passed the First Confiscation Act. This law stated that if slaves are, in fact, property and if this property is owned by any person in active rebellion against lawful Federal authority, then the U.S. military has every right to deny its use to any such person. Any slave that could be wrested from the Confederacy would therefore, in a technical sense, become the property of the United States government.” (National Park Service). I’ve heard it said, “We study history to understand the present and plan for the future.” I made this short video of some of my experiences at Fort Monroe and also it’s connection with slavery. #Juneteenth #1619Project #juneteenth2024 #fortmonroe #OldPointComfort #DEI

Memorable Quotes by President Jimmy Carter The 39th president of the United States has dedicated himself to community service and championed human rights throughout much of his life. Our American values are not luxuries, but necessities -- not the salt in our bread, but the bread itself. ~ Jimmy Carter War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children. ~ Jimmy Carter To be true to ourselves, we must be true to others. ~ Jimmy Carter We should live our lives as though Christ were coming this afternoon. ~ Jimmy Carter We cannot resort to simplistic or extreme solutions which substitute myths for common sense. ~ Jimmy Carter America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense, it is the other way round. Human rights invented America. ~ Jimmy Carter In a nuclear age, each of us is threatened when peace is not secured everywhere. - ~ Jimmy Carter The awareness that health is dependent upon habits that we control makes us the first generation in history that to a large extent determines its own destiny.
Jimmy Carter is a national treasure.

Needle-Mover for Pioneering Women in Industry | Welding & Workforce Dev STEMinist | Keynote Speaker/TedX Alum | 5 Summit Climber | 6-Star Marathoner & Ironman
I’ve always had awesome male mentors, bosses & sponsors in construction & life. (PS - when it’s only 3-10% of ”you” in an industry, you need to work with those who are the 90% to initiate the change). I could join 4000 women’s orgs - & I align with the ones I feel are making meaningful strides of needle-moving. But I’m also here to say if we don’t make safe spaces for men in leadership to unpack what TRULY needs to be done - we’re not getting anywhere. I’m 47 & that needle has only moved a few percentage points in the 25 years I’ve been around. STEM? Women can claim at least 30% in the industry in the same 25 years & that’s thanks to many male c-suites getting on board w/ “authentic vulnerability.” Guys: I’m swinging a pendulum, not a bat. Read it & let’s get vulnerable about how we can help you in your seat or your company explore this change. #diversityequityinclusion #weneedmensconferences #womenalreadygetit #womenintrades #tradesarestem

The world needs fresh ideas and a new type of politics and politicians, representing mankind as a whole and each of us as equals instead of fragmented political interests! We have to grow together in order to urgently address the issues that impact all of us like conflict, climate change, inequality and forced migration together. This we can only do without any dominance, as equals. Collectively in Solidarity. www.convergence.ngo & www.pax.ngo

Military Warrior=Volunteer. The sacrifices of our military. That is the part that many often miss. Mothers and fathers leave their families to go to parts unknown to fight for the very freedoms we often take for granted. Many come back changed. This is a heartwarming video but it is only the feel Good Snapshot that does not show what goes on AFTER this moment. Military members, who deploy, are often disassociated when they return. They are not able to quickly get back to the day to day minutiae of being a part of the family because they have to turn those parts off in their brains to be able to cope while they are gone. Deployments are primary factors of divorce. Husbands and wives, at home, become susceptible to financial issues and emotional pulls to others. Deployed husbands and wives may struggle from the same. We need to ensure that our politicians are pro-military and that they support initiatives that not only increase defense budgets but ones that support family and individual counseling, employment initiatives for spouses, re-entry counseling for members who return, and crisis intervention for those who struggle mentally. These VOLUNTEERS are our frontline of defense. Protect them with your votes!
