Of all the judicial law clerks I've worked with, I HAVEN'T placed the majority of them. Yet I still love working with law clerks. The insider-baseball (recruiting) thing is: many law firms will not pay a legal recruiter's fee for a law clerk, so we legal recruiters aren't allowed to submit law clerk candidates. Because of this, many legal recruiters simply won't work with law clerks - some recruiters don't think clerks are worth their time. Other, unscrupulous legal recruiters work with law clerks but don't tell them that there's a whole class of jobs out there that the recruiter?isn't showing the clerk. Here's how I work: If I work with a clerk, I explain this, and the person I'm working with gets TWO lists: (1) jobs I can submit them to, and (2) jobs I can't submit them to, but to which I suggest they self-apply, with my blessing. I continue to send jobs that fall into each of these two categories. Why do I do this? Besides the obvious fact that this is the only ethical way for a legal recruiter to work with a law clerk, when I work with someone, I'm working with you on your career for the long haul.?I want you to get the job that is absolutely the best for you. And then, if that job ever becomes not the best for you, I want you to trust me enough to come back, and we'll search again. I want to help your friends get the absolute best jobs for them. And sometimes those jobs won't be available through me, and that's okay.
