?? What’s the variability in starch properties of barley samples from all over the world? ?? This is what we unravelled in our newly published paper “A global set of barley varieties shows a high diversity in starch structural properties and related gelatinisation characteristics” by Daan Gielens, Charlotte De Schepper, Niels Langenaeken, Ashley Galant, and Christophe Courtin ?? In this work, the gelatinisation behaviour, amylose content and small to large granule proportions were assessed for 23 industrially relevant barley samples. Given the impact of high starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions on the brewing process, it makes us wonder: Should starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions become selection criteria for barley? ?? We’re excited that the Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Bioprocessing Hub (iFab) was awarded $51 million by the U.S. Economic Development Administration as part of the TechHub program. This funding will allow the coalition, led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to become the national center for research and development in precision fermentation and bioprocessing. Greater Peoria plays a crucial role in this industry. When iFab was preparing its application, they consulted us at GPEDC to help catalog our local industry. Every five years, the Governor and Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity are required to submit a 5-year economic plan. The Illinois Manufacturers' Association appreciates the multiple opportunities to meet with DCEO and their staff including Director Kristin Richards, Casimir Peters, Jason Horwitz and others including a meeting with the IMA board to discuss needed strategies and ideas. Governor JB Pritzker outlined the new plan today in which Illinois is laying the foundation for long-term growth by focusing on key growth industries: ? ?Life sciences ?Quantum computing, AI, and microelectronics ?Clean energy production and manufacturing ?Advanced manufacturing ?Next generation agriculture, agriculture tech and food processing ?Transportation, distribution, and logistics ?
