Ever wonder what happens to your recyclables once they leave the curb? ?????? We're excited to tell you all about it! A few weeks ago we visited a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Grand Rapids and learned about their processes. In Detroit, our materials go to through a similar system at the RRRASOC facility in Southfield. Sad about the amount of materials that end up in the landfill? Us too. Luckily we have a drop-off facility called RecycleHere! at 5960 Lincoln St. where you can take unaccepted items like grocery bags and styrofoam to give them a second life. Need a recycling cart? DID YOU KNOW? ?? “On average, it costs $30 per ton to recycle trash, ?? ?? $50 to send it to the landfill, and ?? $65 to $75 to incinerate it.” ?? The math speaks for itself. Recycling is more cost-effective than incinerating or taking trash to the landfill. Plus, it’s better for the environment and can have even more payoffs in the long run. The number of households that participate in the Covington curbside recycling program has grown tremendously in the last eight years. Here are the numbers by neighborhood. Numbers represent the percentage of households who contract for trash pickup that also use a recycling cart. Notice that every single neighborhood has increased over this period. The recycling program carries no additional cost beyond the annual trash collection fee. In all, some 2,410 tons of recyclable material was diverted from landfills in Fiscal Year 2024. #recycling #CovRecycles #CovingtonRecycles #recyclingprogram

Happy National Battery Day! Celebrate by recycling your household batteries the right way. Batteries can be a fire hazard and never belong in your recycling cart. Residents looking to recycle them can take them to the Dane County Landfill, a Streets Division drop-off site, or search for battery recycling in their area. Bringing them to these sites ensures that they are recycled properly and prevents fires. Check your local guidelines listed on our website for how to properly recycle these special cases. A recent report by Paul Sanderson, Chief Executive at The Recycling Association, highlights a key issue in our industry, and at Re-Gen, we fully support a unified mixed dry recycling (commingled) collection system. With the right investment in technology and state-of-the-art facilities, we are able to produce the highest quality material and the most carbon friendly option. ? The commingled system also increases recycling rates, ensuring more materials are processed effectively and efficiently. This approach is the best option for the public purse, providing cost-effective solutions that benefit taxpayers and public finances. ? The fully commingled system makes recycling easier for householders, simplifying the process and reducing confusion. It's time to embrace modern technology to improve waste processing standards across the board.?? ? #commingled #wastemanagement #recycling

???? Did you know? Toledo City Council and the Board of Lucas County Commissioners approved of plans to construct a materials recovery facility (MRF) at the site of the former South & Western Landfill in Toledo. ??? What does this mean? A materials recovery facility (MRF) would help us recycle in a more economic and efficient manner. Currently, our recycling materials that are put out at the curb or collected at drop-off locations are transferred 90 miles away in Oberlin to be sorted. This single-stream MRF will drastically reduce our county-wide carbon footprint by keeping our process local. Why is this important? In 2023, we opened a new landfill cell to responsibly manage waste, however, somethings can be reused to save space in our landfill. ?? Food scraps can be composted at one of our three local sites. ?? Materials like paper, glass and plastic can be recycled for reuse. Learn more about the MRF at: https://ow.ly/Nhsi50SNxn2
