Internship Spotlight Paper Science and Engineering opens up many opportunities for our students, Kaia Markert is staying close to campus this summer working for Wolfspeed Semiconductor as a Chemical Mechanical Planarization Engineering Intern. He takes us through his adventure! What has been your favorite part so far? The Wolfspeed internship program is very well organized because there are over 100 interns in Durham every summer. Not only do they host fun events like zip lining and intern dinners with the CEO, Gregg Lowe —just a really cool guy, they also help you learn a lot about the processes through meaningful projects. Please share a day in the life of a Wolfspeed intern, Day-to-day varies a lot based on specific department and manager, but my day consistently has lots of meetings, multiple visits to the floor for shadowing experience, and several projects that take up ~50% of my time. How does your internship relate to what you've learned in the classroom? Because this is a semiconductor manufacturing plant, which is very different from paper, you just have to know how to learn. Most everything is new, but there are definitely still constants that are consistent through all of engineering, like lean six sigma and statistics. Do you think the PSE program prepared you for this internship? The PSE program helped me prepare for this internship by providing me with previous work experience in paper mills. Nothing beats learning on the job and as different as semiconductors are from toilet paper, there are several valuable things to be learned about working in a professional environment with other engineers. How is this uniquely different than past internships? My previous two internships were in tissue mills. They are nothing at all like Wolfspeed’s semiconductor manufacturing process, which is exactly why I chose this internship. A lot of us will be graduating with the chemical engineering dual degree, why not use it some? Hopefully working in a completely different industry will broaden my experience and show future employers that I'm comfortable working in foreign environments. What do you do on weekends and after work? Wolfspeed is great because I didn't have to move from NC State. I've been enjoying beach music and new Raleigh restaurants all summer with friends. Thanks for sharing your unique summer internship with us, Kaia. PSE is so proud of you for branching out and digging in! As we wrap up National Engineers Week, we’d love to share with you some advice we compiled from the team this week: “Make sure you love what you do, pick a type of engineering that you get excited about. Also, good work ethic and ownership will get you further than any degrees or licenses.” – Jackie Rowland, PE “Once you’re in your engineering classes, reach out to the different local firms for internship opportunities, don’t wait for the companies to advertise an internship opportunity to you. There are several different paths in each engineering discipline and an internship is the best way to preview what a typical day looks like in that particular field.” – Ben Pearson, PE “Make sure you learn as much as you can in school about how to solve problems and think creatively. Once you get to the real world all the variables and assumptions are not given to you, so you need to know how to break down something complex in order to solve the real-world problem.” – Parker Rowland, ME, MBA “If you’re unsure what field of engineering to choose, I highly recommend taking an intro class or other exploratory engineering class if your school offers it. It’s also totally normal to change your field of engineering multiple times before you find the one for you. You just have to find the one that clicks, but once you do, it should be both fun and engaging.” – Sierra Simpson, EI “Don’t be afraid to fail as it will happen many times in your career. Make friends with your co-workers/fellow students and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you are not understanding something.” – Jacob VanLooven, EI #NationalEngineersWeek #RussellRowlandTeam

Meet Curtin Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Haniff Soorian Pagalavan who is pursuing his dream as an Electrical Engineer at Western Power. ???? Haniff was involved in Curtin University’s Internship Gateway Program, which gives organisations the chance to foster connections with highly motivated science and engineering students. Through the program, your organisation will not only contribute to shaping the development of our industry-ready graduates but will also provide your team with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills. For Haniff, undertaking the internship was an invaluable experience that prepared him for the workforce. “I spent about three months as an intern and for the first month, they sent me into the workshop. I got to see how the switchboards were constructed. In that experience, I’d say the most valuable thing was seeing how the drawings translated into the real physical thing. Seeing it in real life makes a lot of a difference and I learned that I’m more capable than I think I am,” Haniff said. Want to be involved in this year’s program? Find out more here ?? https://shorturl.at/dez17 There are a limited number of industry partnerships available, make sure to express your interest before Friday 24 May. ?? #CurtinUniversity #CurtinAlumni #Internship #Program #Science #Engineering #STEM #WorkExperience #ProfessionalDevelopment #Professional #Career #Development

I can still remember sitting in the front row during the orientation session for all IT students. It was my one-year student internship at NNPC, and each department head was supposed to give a brief introduction about their department and its importance. Everyone laughed when my departmental head stood up and started his speech by saying we, the maintenance department, were the "errand boys" of the organization. Of course, as a student of mechanical engineering, I was posted to work in the maintenance department. The name became a bit of a stigma for us students in that department. But here's the thing: at the end of the day, we were too important to be neglected. We were crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of the machines and other internal equipment in various offices. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: every little department and person is of great importance to the overall success of an organization, irrespective of what you do or what name you are called. Don't let labels define your worth. A job title is just a label. You are an integral part of a larger system, and your contribution matters just as much as anyone else's. Find pride in your work. Whether you're tackling complex problems or ensuring basic functionality, your skills are essential. Take pride in the role you play and the impact you make. You are much more important than you think you are! Well, this is my service year and I'm still an errand boy at Obasanjo Farms.?? What unexpected experiences have shaped your perspective on your role? Share your stories in the comments. #mondaymotivation #engineeringlife #wellbeing #value

????? Did you know that nearly 70% of engineering interns receive full-time job offers after their internship? At RTP, we believe in the transformative power of internships—not just for the interns, but for the companies that host them! One of our latest blog posts dives into how engineering firms like ours leverage internships to drive innovation, recruit future leaders, and fulfill corporate social responsibility. Interns bring fresh perspectives and out-of-the-box thinking that can spark solutions to long-standing challenges. For us, internships aren't just a short-term engagement; they’re a long-term investment in talent, culture, and community. As our General Manager of Engineering, Larry Friedline, puts it, “Internships help the intern learn what we do at RTP and helps us learn about the intern and how they may best fit within our team.” Explore our blog post to see how companies that actively shape the intern experience fulfill their responsibility to the next generation while securing a competitive edge in the dynamic engineering landscape: https://lnkd.in/eZacdazz #EngineeringInternships #STEMCareers #InternshipExperience #FutureEngineers #TalentDevelopment #EngineeringLeadership #CorporateResponsibility #WorkforceDevelopment #EngineeringEducation
