STAFF PROFILE: Boerne Utilities’ electrical system, which provides power to more than 6,500 customers, is maintained by a team of just 11 employees led by Electric Construction Superintendent Glenn Garcia. Undoubtedly, the greatest testament to the electric department’s diligent maintenance was Winter Storm Uri in February 2021. When most of the state endured prolonged power outages for days on end and temperatures well below freezing, Boerne Utilities kept the lights on with minimal outages. “When everyone around us was losing power, we were able to keep the power on for the community,” Garcia said. It’s the perfect season to get outside and spruce up your yard. Maybe you’re thinking about planting some trees. Or installing a new mailbox. Which is great. But before you grab that shovel, there’s one crucial step you must take: Call 811 before you dig. Why? Underground utilities are everywhere. Hitting a gas line, electric cable, or water pipe can cause serious problems. You could end up with a big repair bill, a power outage, or worse, a dangerous accident. Calling 811 is easy and free. You tell them where you plan to dig, and they send someone to mark the underground utilities with flags or paint. This helps you know where it’s safe to dig. By taking this simple step, you protect yourself and your community. So, before you dig into your next summer project, call 811. It’s quick, easy, and can save you a lot of trouble. #utilities #anchorconstruction #construction

Not only is knowing the precise location of buried utilities critical—understanding their condition can make all the difference. In this case, a corroded gas pipe gave way, impacting a nearby waterline during repairs. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, but this event highlights the importance of utility mapping and condition monitoring to prevent accidents and disruptions. With ProStar’s PointMan?, utilities like gas lines are digitally mapped and recorded, enhancing buried asset management. This precise data enables teams to assess both location and condition before starting repairs, helping to keep everyone safe. Stay safe by keeping buried utilities and infrastructure fully mapped and visible. https://lnkd.in/g9Cmfbrz

? For the next six to eight weeks, residents of Southview Drive will notice our Greater Sudbury Hydro crews and contractors working to modernize and upgrade our local distribution system in that area. ?? This rebuild project is to renew existing distribution system infrastructure. New hydro poles are being installed which may lead to increased noise and dust due to heavy equipment. Residents in the area may face some commuting issues while work is being performed. Some planned power interruptions may be necessary to complete the upgrades safely. We will notify affected customers prior to any potential power interruptions. ?? Proactively replacing aging infrastructure helps minimize unexpected power outages and improves overall system reliability. It also increases public safety.

The network system in use at Manitoba Hydro is found only in Winnipeg. The system is designed for maximum service reliability, fed from five different feeders and 50 network transformers. The network system consists of transformers that are “tied” together through a common secondary buss. Network systems are highly reliable compared to the more common radial distribution system. Operation, maintenance, and design tend to be assigned to specialists within a given utility. This past weekend we dealt with another major structural fire, however this time it was fed off the network system. Although these systems are very reliable, these situations can be tricky and hazardous to deal with, considering you're working in a confined space and having to disconnect energized 125/216V cables. Some quick thinking by on call staff allowed our group to prevent a 3400 customer outage to downtown offices and isolate a section from our secondary grid, resulting in no additional outages other than the structure engulfed in flames.

Nice to see other utilities outside of CA adapt to pre-emptive measures that reduce ignitions and prevent large scale wildfires. It's a proven fact that PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoffs) and EPSS (Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings) are big factors in reducing or eliminating possible ignitions!

Many utility scale BESS facilities are close coupled to the substation yard. Strategically locating perimeter fence grounding in the BESS yard can mitigate hazardous transfer voltages while minimizing costs of grounding the entire fence length.
