Please read George’s nuanced piece capturing the way folks in Central Oregon are trying a new way of making community decisions on solving problems like childhood homelessness. I’m proud that The Rockefeller Foundation, Omidyar Network, and other national funders were able to help some, but this was driven by local resources and determination—the bake sales are the real story here, not the grants.?This was sparked by amazing local leaders who care deeply about the place they live—and also believe that people in central OR can do bold, big things that lead the country. (A few I've had the honor of speaking with are Josh Burgess Anthony Broadman and Elizabeth Marino). My colleague Masha Hamilton gets to go to Deschutes County this weekend to meet others, I'm envious. If you’re in philanthropy, get in touch! The many organizations in Oregon who are involved in both the assembly and childhood homelessness work still need your support, two among many are the Central Oregon Civic Action Project and Elizabeth's Lab for the American Conversation at Oregon State University-Cascades! There are also other communities across the country who want to try using the assemblies to solve problems they care about (my hometown is one!). They need your help--trying something new like this is a big effort and risk, especially for folks in smaller communities. DemocracyNext and Healthy Democracy are great first stops to learn more, the Network Democracy Funders Network is developing some cool tools to make supporting innovative approaches to democracy even easier--stay tuned. A final note: assemblies aren't about getting to a particular result. They aren't about being more or less progressive, conservative, populist, whatever. The idea is to get everyone around the table to solve problems. No one knows what the recommendations from the assembly in central Oregon will be--that's up to them. ??
It's been 15 years since I've served on a jury -- but I still remember that sense of pride and purpose when our rag-tag group of 12 got started on deliberations. We had heard three days of testimony in a bizarre drunk-driving case. Now it was up to us to do the right thing. Even though none of us were experts on such matters, we all had been careful listeners. We bought into the idea of working as a group; we were respectful of each others' positions. It was fascinating to see how we revisited the testimony, weighed the evidence, made room for the quieter members to share their views, too -- and then came up with what we felt was the right verdict. Could that sort of small-D democracy take hold in other ways, too? There's a "citizen's assembly" taking place this season in Bend, Ore., gathering 30 ordinary Oregonians to explore better ways of addressing youth homelessness. It's a group of elk hunters and acupuncturists, students and retired lawyers. It's bit of everyone -- just like jury duty . I spent a weekend watching this group action and wrote this piece about it for The Chronicle of Philanthropy. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY: 2. Ignoring the letter from The Kcmo Fairness Board Chairman & Fairness Committee regarding Civil Rights violations ? Harrasment of minority contractors ? inadequate reporting from Kcmo CREO department ? No Disparity report for 9 years and more ? 2016 Disparity Report below: Department of I think 1.2 minority [participation] and 2.5 WBE [participation], when there was adequate availability of minority and women contractors to meet the City’s standard kind of goal of 15 [percent] and 7 [percent]. They’re diluting the opportunity for minority and women contractors when it comes through the statutory business development organizations, all of whom have different sets of rules..… There ought to be a uniform code that is incorporated in all the development agreements which people in our community never see.… There’s a disconnect. And I realize they’re trying to change some of that now but the insulting part of it was there was more money spent through statutory agencies last year for contracting activities than there were through City departments.… It’s obviously developer driven. By the time we see it the development agreement has already been executed. Caused lack of capital for Jackson County schools and libraries. Mayor Lucas and Insult to African Americans everywhere?

"Maybe my friend above is right, and family foundations should not exist. Really, foundations in general shouldn’t exist. Heck, most nonprofits shouldn’t exist. Most of us are here because of inequitable tax codes that allow wealthy individuals and corporations to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Family foundations can play a vital role in reforming tax codes. Yes, success would mean yours and other family foundations may not exist. But is that not what we’re all supposed to be working towards?" this.
“A serious issue is that because of how wealth is concentrated in the world, most of these families are white. And they tend to marry other white people. So family foundation boards are glaringly white. They can bring in as many staff of color and consultants as they want and discuss DEI and even have genuine success implementing it, but power is still concentrated among white families. How do we address inequity when this significant dissonance is accepted as normal?”

The $300m USD California Endowment Fund is interesting. Its core proposition is that “transforming California begins and ends with people power”. Central to which is the concept of organizing at community level with no silos - “funding campaigns helping end mass incarceration; welcome, protect, and promote our immigrant and refugee relatives; helping us create housing and health for all people; care for our common home and disrupt the climate emergency affecting all of us.” The fund enables philanthropy to follow “the lead of community organizers in developing intergenerational leadership, raising the voices of those closest to systemic problems, and promoting civic engagement and activism.” I wonder about the impact this can have on ethical investing too.
