Over 200 food pantry leaders from across our city provided their expert input on how state policies can fight food insecurity among New Yorkers who are grappling with the high cost of living. In partnership with Food Bank For New York City and United Way of New York City, our city’s three largest anti-hunger organizations, we identified three ways that State policies can help create food secure futures: ? ?? 1. Get more food to people who need it by investing in the emergency food system and expanding SNAP benefits and eligibility? 2. Make childcare affordable to help alleviate a key factor in higher food insecurity rates for families? 3. Improve housing stability to protect New Yorkers who are rent-burdened and 3X as likely to experience food insecurity We recently sent these policy priorities in a letter to Governor Hochul. Erik Adams' budget proposals have raised concerns about essential services in NYC, including schools, libraries, and food funding. Today marks the final opportunity to address these issues before the fiscal year commencing on July 1, 2024. As part of City Harvest, we advocate for a NYC budget that: - Allocates $60 million to the Community Food Connection program to support food banks and pantries amidst rising demand. - Ensures sufficient funding and staff for critical programs like the Department of Education's Office of Food and Nutrition Services and the Human Resources Administration to prevent hunger in our communities. - Establishes a $5 million Food Justice Fund to promote food justice and economic development in low-income and BIPOC areas. With potential cuts looming and pantry visits significantly increasing since 2019, it is crucial to prevent these budget reductions. Support our cause by signing the petition urging the mayor to fully fund hunger relief today: https://p2a.co/LAGpQ1d

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its annual report,?Household Food Security in the United States in 2023, showing 1 in 5 children live in food insecure households.?The following is a statement from Jason Gromley, Senior Director for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign: “This trend is going the wrong direction. Nearly 14 million kids now face hunger. To see childhood hunger grow again after last year’s staggering increase is tragic and shows we are still not doing enough to ensure children in America are well nourished and families have the resources to meet their most basic needs." I live in Arlington, Virginia. It’s a place that's rich in diversity, food, and greenery. It’s also affected by food insecurity, with more than 23,000 people (nearly 10% of the population) not having access to enough food for an active, healthy life. These are just some of the eye-opening facts released this week as part of Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap Study (https://lnkd.in/ep7JimvB) —an annual, comprehensive view of how food insecurity varies across the U.S. As the only national study to provide county-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs, this study is a powerful tool for all of us to use to better understand hunger in our communities. It shows that food insecurity exists in every county, parish and congressional district in this nation, but it isn’t experienced equally. Food insecurity levels vary across regions, influenced by factors like unemployment and poverty rates as well as policies and practices rooted in history that continue to hold people back today. I encourage you to learn about the impact of hunger in your community. Spark conversations around the systemic factors that drive food insecurity then join the movement to end hunger (https://lnkd.in/enR6y7VC). Help us create a future where we all have access to the food and resources we need to thrive. #EndHunger

When school’s out, will healthy meals for our kids go with it? This summer, families across NYC will see their pandemic-era food benefits begin to expire. These benefits historically covered meal costs for families whose students received free meals at school. At Children's Aid, we know that youth flourish in school and in life when they grow up healthy and strong. Securing access to nutritional meals for our students and their families is a critical component of building resilient communities and helping children reach their full potential. Under the new Summer EBT program, most eligible families will receive funds to cover their meals for the summer automatically, no application is necessary. Learn more about how this new initiative will help mitigate the effects of expiring pre-pandemic funding: https://lnkd.in/eZU-Azh7
