As Peter Slatin reflects in our May issue of Able News, "The fight to unleash digital accessibility embodied by GAAD and its celebration of all things being digitally accessible is a primary building block of global disability inclusion." Not all disabilities are visible. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Scheme is a global initiative to help individuals with non-visible disabilities signal that they may need extra time, support or understanding. Many zoos and aquariums have embraced this simple yet effective program, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy a seamless and welcoming experience. Staff members can receive training to learn how to respond to and support individuals wearing the lanyard. Some ZAA members that support this initiative are: WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium Taronga Zoo Sydney Adelaide Zoo Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Dreamworld Sea World #InternationalDayofPersonswithDisabilities

?? Accessibility is key to ensuring everyone can experience and engage with the world around us. The importance of accessible information cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to outdoor recreation. For decades, specialized guidebooks have played a crucial role in empowering disabled visitors to explore national parks and nature, ensuring they can plan trips with confidence. The National Park Guide for the Handicapped (1971), Easy Access to National Parks (1992), and The Disabled Hiker’s Guide (2022) are prime examples of how detailed, inclusive information can bridge gaps in access. Deaf farmer champions greater accessibility in agriculture From Tiiseto Manoko for Food For Mzansi- "People with disabilities play a crucial role in advocating for and designing adaptive tools and technologies that make farming more inclusive. Examples include wheelchair-accessible farm equipment, voice-activated devices, and specialized tractors, which help individuals with mobility impairments carry out tasks that may otherwise be challenging. Matebogo Victoria from Randfontein, Gauteng, is an inspiring individual who hasn't let her disability hold her back. She began working the land with the goal of serving the deaf community and setting examples for others." #AccessibilityInTheNews Helen Mushi Haben Girma Billion Strong Tiisetso Manoko Meryl Evans, CPACC (deaf) Mariella Paulino-Peralta, MPRCC, CPACC

My recent experience with AFCA is that there has been inordinate delay in progressing matters - plus fundamental issues concerning procedural fairness have also arisen. This post is interesting in that that it shows how AFCA wishes to position itself - sorting out disagreements with a financial firm. In fact, AFCA has a very substantive jurisdiction which in WA would cover disputes that otherwise would be resolved by the Supreme Court - AFCA can now consider disputes where the amount claimed is $1,263,000 and it can award up to $631,500. With respect to some disputes, its jurisdiction is unlimited. My concern being that there appears to be a mismatch between how AFCA positions itself and how it applies its Rules - versus the very substantive jurisdiction that it actually has (which would ordinarily be exercised by a Court).
Last week the AFCA Community Engagement Team was on the lands of the Kaurna People, at the Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo in Adelaide, South Australia. We were pleased to engage alongside a diverse range of exhibitors, connecting older people, and people with disabilities (and their families and carers) with helpful services.
