I guess Stripe is moving its Treasury program from Evolve Bank & Trust to Fifth Third Bank. This doesn't overtly say that but given the huge mess at Evolve, it's a logical conclusion. I speculated about this a few weeks ago... While no one was looking, Patrick Collison created Stripe, a fundamentally transformative payments system that traditional banks consistently underestimated. Today, Stripe is unquestionably one of the world's most valuable private companies. Here's Patrick's story: Patrick grew up in rural Ireland. He started coding at age 10 and brilliantly realized that payments infrastructure was genuinely broken - banks were actually processing transactions the same way they did in the 1960s. He seriously wrote his first line of Stripe code while still a teenager and amazingly convinced his brother John to drop out of MIT to join him - they literally lived on $2 ramen while coding 16 hours a day. To say Patrick was setup for success from the beginning would be an overstatement. The odds of success for a new payments company are honestly less than 0.5% - it's genuinely mind-boggling how complex financial infrastructure really is. And only 3% make it to processing billions in payments - most founders inevitably give up when facing the monumentally difficult task of building trust with both merchants and banks simultaneously.

How you operate needs to change as your business grows. Many have come before you and many of them have tried and failed. Do things that don't scale is a key lesson that helped Stripe in its early days. Stripe is now an at-scale, self-service business with over $1trn of payment volume. You never need a human. But in the early on, John Collison spoke to customers at 1:1. As founders, you learn so much by working 1:1 with customers and providing them with direct service. This gives you insights into their real problems and helps you, as an engineer or product person, build the thing that does scale. Stripe is the ultimate example of this in Fintech. Everything has an API, great documentation and can be configured from their dashboard. You never need a person. They hide a lot of the complexity of the payments industry behind a beautifully designed product. Fintech giant Stripe is opening a new office in the City of London as it looks to turbocharge its expansion in the UK. The company – which is dual-headquartered in San Francisco, California, and Dublin, Ireland – announced the new UK office at the Stripe Tour event on Tuesday, saying it will be twice as big as the old one. Stripe did not disclose how many people the building at 201 Bishopsgate can accommodate but Bloomberg reports it will house around 250 staffers across engineering, sales, partnerships, financial compliance and operations. "It's kind of near the City and kind of near Shoreditch and so it's blending tech and financial services," Stripe cofounder and president John Collison told LinkedIn News, adding that all companies want a "good deal" on somewhere with a lot of space that's near a Tube station. Stripe's financial infrastructure platform enables businesses to accept payments online and in person, and manage their revenue. Stripe says it processed over $1tn in payments in 2023 and the UK is its second largest market, with customers including Monzo Bank, Octopus Energy, ITV and Hargreaves Lansdown.
