Hacking Electric Vehicles: What is a BMS (Battery Management System), what’s inside it, and why its cybersecurity is essential for EV safety and security. ?? ?? ?? The BMS, or Battery Management System, controls all aspects of the battery in an electric vehicle. It consists of a group of ECUs, communication interfaces, sensors, and more. What’s particularly important is that the BMS manages the EV battery’s load, capacity, temperature, and other critical parameters, ensuring that the inherently unstable Lithium-Ion battery cells remain in optimal condition. You can access it through: -> OBD (diagnostic routines will work) -> Tapping into internal buses (e.g., CAN Bus) -> Protocols on the EV charging port -> Physical access (disassembly and reverse engineering) Researchers are already looking into the cybersecurity of EV batteries (see the links below), and the reason is clear: this is a huge and expensive component; it can be a target for different "tweaks" and "unlocks." A good example is the research of Patrick Kiley, "Reverse Engineering the Tesla Battery Management System to Increase Power Available". Another reason is that potential vulnerabilities in the BMS of an EV could easily damage the vehicle and harm the passengers inside. Here, we have no public research yet, but I believe you’ve already seen an EV catch fire out of nowhere. This can be a valid use case here. To summarize, please make sure you include these specific EV threats in your threat model and prioritize them accordingly. And if you do research on BMS, make sure you put safety first: it has high voltage in. In fact you will have also wBMS ;)
