Our AI-powered ratings are optimised to calculate how much players contribute to their teams' probability of winning. Oval's expected points (xP) algorithm analyses the impact of every action on a team's chance of scoring or conceding next, across the thousands of matches and millions of data points that we collect every year. A lot of the names that you would expect to see are at the top of the charts (e.g. James Lowe, Thomas Ramos and Damian Penaud). But there also some unsung heroes - such as Manuel Zuliani, Benetton's 23-year-old flanker. Across the last 12 months of rugby in the United Rugby Championship, European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) and Rugby World Cup France 2023, Zuliani has won more turnovers per 80 (2.25) than any other player who has featured for at least 400 minutes in those competitions. Hence his extraordinary defensive rating of 97.6!
