Friday Thoughts: PR Measurement - What Are We Doing!?! Muck Rack released its State of PR Measurement this week (rough timing) and there's A LOT to unpack. From the report (link to the report below): - Most PR pros are only somewhat confident in the metrics they report to stakeholders - Linking PR to business goals is the biggest challenge - About half of PR pros’ budgets are affected by whether they reach their goals >>> So we are not confident about how we are spinning these metrics to show an impact on the business, yet we have to spin it because our budgets depend on it. How do you sleep at night? And I keep reading posts bickering over press releases... But wait, it gets better: - 89% say that demonstrating the impact of their work is the main purpose of measurement Okay, I'll buy that. So what are the top metrics being measured: #1 Number of stories placed #2 Reach/impressions #3 Key message pull-through >>> How do these metrics relate to business goals? They don't. They show your effort, but not the effect of your effort - which is your impact. Great, you reached a lot of people with a message we care about, but then what happened?
