Architects often worry that expansion joints will be visually intrusive, but in reality, most people never notice them. Sika Emseal’s innovative solutions ensure expansion joints are practically invisible through thoughtful design choices like placement, color selection, and the use of shadow lines. For instance, joints can be strategically placed in facade plane changes or camouflaged to match surrounding materials. Take Seismic Colorseal as an example it blends so well that even from 5 feet away, its difficult to spot. In areas like curtainwalls, inside corners, and corporate campuses, careful design makes these joints almost undetectable. Even in high-traffic spaces like sports arenas or shopping centers, patrons are unlikely to notice expansion joints, as their focus lies elsewhere. In horizontal applications, like decks or parking garages, clever use of creative color design and deck coatings can diminish the visual impact of joints. At locations like the Venetian Pool Deck in Las Vegas (cleverly camouflaged by applicator Expansion Specialties, Inc.) or the Prudential Center in Boston, joints disappear into the architectural design. Showcase Project - Private House Flynn Mews Although the city of Dublin is lowrise and low-density by European standards, much of its city centre is comprised of large, grand houses facing grand streets or squares such as Merrion Square or Pembroke Road. While presenting a grand front to the public, the rear of these houses was reserved for service access, deliveries, and coach and mews houses for servants along cobbled and paved lanes. Since the 1980s, and especially in recent boom-time years, these mews and coach houses built in the back gardens have been converted, demolished and rebuilt by some of Ireland’s best architects. In the inner-city suburb of South Yarra, in the city of Melbourne, Victoria State, Australia, a dynamic mixed-use project incorporates historical design into its contemporary architectural style. The six story office building with a first floor restaurant was masterfully designed by Bird de la Coeur Architects. The designers took a unique approach to the brick facade of the building by using a flex brick system. The design and brick choice are meant to compliment the historic 1890’s south yarra post office across the street. Designers set about weaving this building into the urban fabric of the neighborhood by implementing a brise soleil scattered brick floating facade. This facade, allows for natural sunlight to bathe the interior spaces of the building, while also being able to filter out some sunlight to reduce solar heat gain inside the space. The carbon neutral bricks are made with biofuel locally in tazmania. The strategically placed bricks, provide a combination of privacy while also maintaining views of the city. They work as a thermal regulator, while also helping direct wind to move through the interior spaces to naturally venthilate it and reduce energy costs. A rooftop garden adds an insulative layer to the roof of the building, and provides the building users with a place of respite. This project, is a phenomenal example of how we can create meaningful and impactful developments, while also implementing and promoting sustainability practices in our urban environments.
