We'd like to extend our gratitude to the United Kingdom Harbour Masters Association for hosting another fantastic Autumn Conference in London this week and for inviting Shirley Miles to present. Shirley's insightful session on pollution prevention through environmental and asset management compliance highlighted three key areas: ??Impact of Pollution Incidents: Pollution incidents can severely disrupt port activities, incur significant cleanup costs, lead to insurance claims or increased premiums, attract fines and compensatory claims from third parties, and cause reputational damage. ??Challenges and High-Risk Activities: Ports face unique challenges due to their proximity to large bodies of water, extensive surface areas, ageing infrastructure that predates current standards, and limited baseline asset information. High-risk activities such as bunkering and fuel transfer, handling large volumes of potentially polluting substances, and accommodating multiple tenants and sub-contractors pose specific compliance challenges. ??Compliance and Maintenance: Proper maintenance and timely reporting of defects are crucial to prevent pollution incidents and ensure all actions are documented and inspected. Compliance requires adherence to BS EN 858 and CIRIA c736 standards, which include regular servicing, integrity testing, maintaining records, and fitting warning devices. Who wants to talk about implementing the #CSDDD? ?? Last Wednesday the European Parliament approved the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. Soon, large EU companies will be legally required to conduct social and environmental due diligence on their supply chains, and adopt strategies aligned with 1.5 °C warming. ?? Whether your company is in scope of the CSDDD or not, the sound of the forward march of stakeholder expectations is audible for all. ?? I’ve worked with some of the best-known global brands to stay ahead of these expectations, but I believe that 'best in class' responsible sourcing practices shouldn't be exclusive to 'biggest in class' companies.? ??
