Championing Cancer Awareness
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and 毕马威 is actively championing cancer awareness initiatives in collaboration with American Cancer Society (ACS). In a personal reflection, I share the profound impact cancer has had on my life and why I support ACS.
Losing both grandmothers to cancer at ages ten and thirty was a poignant introduction to the harsh reality of this disease. The narrative took another turn when my father was diagnosed with stage one colon cancer five years later. Timely detection and treatment proved instrumental, and he stands as a testament to the importance of early screening. You can hear more about my connection to cancer by clicking here.
Beyond my personal experiences, my commitment to this cause stems from the broader societal toll that cancer exacts. In 2023, ACS anticipates 1.9 million new cancer cases in the United States, disproportionately impacting specific demographics due to healthcare disparities. ACS defines health equity as ensuring everyone has a fair opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. Although ACS is making strides in health equity, challenges persist, demanding concerted efforts to bridge these gaps in care.
KPMG has a rich history of supporting ACS, and I am privileged to serve as the national Community Impact Network Leader for ACS at KPMG. This network comprises over 55 dedicated professionals from 24 offices nationwide. Additionally, I proudly chair the American Cancer Society - Illinois Area Board, collaborating with inspirational leaders committed to advancing the fight against cancer.

I invite you to join me in dedicating time this month and beyond to explore avenues for involvement in the battle against cancer. The ACS website offers insights into local volunteer opportunities, and this page provides valuable resources to aid friends and family affected by this disease. My personal contribution this month involves the Men Wear Pink campaign. You can watch my interview with Crain's Chicago Business about Men Wear Pink by clicking here.
The impact of ACS' lifesaving efforts is evident in the fact that over 18 million Americans are cancer survivors today. I am grateful for KPMG's role in contributing to this progress. Together, as we continue our collective efforts, we will achieve a world free from the burden of cancer.
