VESDA Design Changes On June 30, 2024, the 7th edition of UL268 will be the mandated listing standard for smoke detectors. The 7th edition of the standard has added three new tests. These additional tests have resulted in significant changes to the listing for the Xtralis VESDA line of air aspirating smoke detectors. Be alert that some IT&M contractors may try to report that existing VESDA detectors are no longer listed and must be replaced with new detector. VESDA units, including pipe networks, that were installed and approved under the 6th edition of UL 268 maintain their listing and do not need to be changed out. However, after June 30, 2024, purchasing of detectors listed under the 6th edition will no longer be possible. In the event that a VESDA detector needs to be replaced, the new detector will need to comply with the conditions of its listing (i.e., now the 7th Ed of UL 268), including the reduced transport times. Before investing in a significant expense to "upgrade" a VESDA system, it may be worthwhile to contact an independent fire protection expert for an objective interpretation. #VESDA?#Smokedetection?#UL268,?#UL
The 7th edition of UL268 has become the new listing standard for smoke detectors and has significantly changed the listing requirements for air aspirating detectors (i.e. VESDA and others). The attached blog is critical for those of us in the field so that we understand the impact. This change will impact new systems and existing systems when a detector is needed to be changed out.
