Does your construction business have a turnover of up to £10m? ??? Consider a virtual finance department instead of a full finance team. To be honest, I’d be surprised if you had a full finance team. It would cost around £300k a year to hire each individual full-time. A virtual finance department provides you with a comprehensive finance team's expertise without the need to hire each role full-time. You get the same skills but with the blend you need (at a much cheaper price). For example, let’s compare the financial controller role: In a full finance team: They're employed full-time, with a full salary. In a virtual finance department: They contribute to about 20% of the specific tasks you need, seamlessly integrated with the virtual team's services. The other thing with hiring a full finance team is ensuring they are all doing the job well. In reality, you don’t even know how to do their job. Interested in hiring a virtual finance department? Get in touch Mayflower Accountancy & Tax. #FinanceDepartment #ConstructionFinance #ConstructionAccountant #Construction

The 'Lateral Trap' Killing Your Hiring Efforts Me: Hello Sir, thank you for your time. I'm Shariq Ali from Brance Global Client: Welcome. Me: I saw you are hiring for a Financial Controller position. I would like to ask you a few questions so that I can better assist in filling this role. Client: Go ahead. You: What are the must-have and nice-to-have qualifications for the Financial Controller role? Client: We need someone with 5+ years of experience as a Financial Controller in the construction industry. A CPA is nice to have, along with experience using accounting tools and commercial construction experience - not residential. Me: Understood. What is the salary range for this position? Client: We have a budget of $120,000 to $140,000 plus benefits and PTO. Me: That's a solid range. Do you have any flexibility on the salary or the ability to offer a hybrid work arrangement? Client: No. Me: I see. Do you have any flexibility on the 5+ years of direct Financial Controller experience requirement? Client: No, we need 5+ years of construction experience specifically as a Controller. Me: Sir, based on my experience, most Financial Controllers with similar backgrounds are already making a comparable salary in that range. Can you provide any additional reasons I could highlight to ideal candidates,? Client: ?we're a mission-driven employer, having a great culture, and treating employees like family Me: it will be quite difficult to persuade qualified candidates to make a lateral move for no increase in salary or responsibilities. In my professional experience, 90-95% of people take new jobs for either increased pay or an elevated title. Other than consulting or tech roles, most industries have relatively standardized pay bands based on title, location, and years of experience. Client: What should we do in that case? You: I recommend being a bit more flexible on your requirements. Provide compelling reasons for someone to want to join your company and learn a new role - career growth, an outstanding culture, meaningful equity, or work-life balance perks. Otherwise, ask yourself honestly - would you leave your current position for an identical lateral role? Client: No, I would not. Me: I appreciate your understanding. Based on this conversation, what would be the next step? Should we proceed with launching the search process while potentially revisiting some of the requirements? Client: I need to discuss this with my team further. You: Absolutely, make sure to circle back with me. Now I want to ask Talent Acquisition, HR, and executive professionals out there - what do you think? How would you handle this type of situation? Am I off-base with my assessment here or have you encountered similar challenges?

How do you know if your business needs a CFO? Many businesses really do need a CFO but don't know they do. I mean, it's hard to imagine that a single position will make much difference, right? But think back to other significant hires you've made and the impact they've had. It might have been hiring: - your first dedicated salesperson, and seeing them land the big clients you really wanted; - a really good bookkeeper, which gave you back your nights and weekends; - the first customer service officer, who could deal with clients without being distracted by everything else in the business; - the managed IT services person who unscrambles your IT systems from their sticky tape and rubber bands to give you IT that works safely and consistently every single time. These strategic hires are investments in your business's future. If you'd like to find out exactly how a part-time CFO can be your next impactful staffing investment, let us know.
