An incredibly insightful address by Michael Galligan upon accepting the 2025 NYSBA International Section Award for Distinction in International Law and Affairs. His vision for strengthening international civil society despite today's global challenges deeply resonates. He powerfully argues that even in our fractured world, we must double down on fostering cross-border dialogue, preserving free movement of people and ideas, and promoting thoughtful international commerce. His perspective on how legal professionals can bridge divides through "free discourse" - communication that maintains diplomatic respect while standing firm on facts and truth - offers a masterclass in modern international engagement. What struck me most was his practical roadmap for bar associations to strengthen international civil society: leveraging global chapter networks, activating UN observer status, and coordinating across state bars. His reminder that New York law serves as a cornerstone for transnational commerce and finance worldwide underscores why local legal communities must think globally. At a time when international cooperation faces headwinds, Galligan's message is clear: legal professionals have both the opportunity and obligation to foster connection, understanding, and rule of law across borders. Looking back on 2024, one of my most memorable professional experiences was the May conference co-sponsored by Pitt Law's Center for International Legal Education (CILE) with the Law Faculties of the University of Verona and the University of Zagreb. I'm pleased that the article based upon my presentation will be published in the Journal of Law and Commerce. After sitting on the news for some time, I'm happy to finally share that my paper "Constitutional Unamendability as Self-Embracing Omnipotence?" has been published in the 41st volume of the Singapore Law Review. But feel free to DM me for a PDF) My paper examines the issue of constitutional unamendability through the lens of what H.L.A. Hart called "self-embracing omnipotence": the act of a sovereign body irreversibly binding itself to precommitments. This has been increasingly common practice in both civil and common law systems, through the mechanisms of Eternity Clauses and the Basic Structure Doctrine. Such mechanisms have been justified through the concepts of constituent power and constitutiona identity. I argue, however, that only the concept of constituent power (under some conditions) can be understood as "self-embracing omnipotence" in the strict sense. Nonetheless, this presents one way in which legal positivism can accommodate constitutional unamendability. I hope this will be of interest to those working in legal philosophy and comparative constitutional law alike. The paper was originally written in a shorter form as a final assignment for a Jurisprudence course I took last year under Prof James Penner, but draws extensively from what I learned in Dr Gretchen Allen-Mestrallet's Political Institutions and Thinking Like a Lawyer courses in Sciences Po; in that sense it can be seen as the product of some of the most important knowledge I gained from my two years in France. Published by the NUS Faculty of Law's Singapore Law Review, the overall volume contains 9 other papers written by Law students at NUS and elewhere, 7 of which emerged from the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (NUS Law) - Thammasat University Law Peer Learning Intitiative (CATPLI) Writing Project. They cover topics ranging from private nuisance in Singapore to prospective overruling in South Korea to the balance between legality and legitimate expectations. There is also a piece by Prof Andrew Harding on territotial autonomy in Southeast Asia.
