SABBATH ?Memorial of the Guardian Angels God’s Gentle Messengers? I don’t know if you share the same experience, but when I was young—very young—I wished I would grow up as quickly as possible. Maybe that’s the way it is for us human beings. When we were little, we wanted to grow up right away. But when we are older, we do everything we can to stay young. But why do children want to become adults? That’s because the feeling of being independent is fascinating. As adults, we also seem to be more confident in ourselves. We feel that we do not need guidance, direction, or anyone telling us what to do and what not to do. But mind you, this is where we get it all wrong.? In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus cites once again the example of children to address the dispute, the conflict, the quarrel among His disciples as regards greatness in the Kingdom of heaven. Using the children’s nature and needs, Jesus wants His disciples to realize that even as adults and as His chosen followers, they still need guidance.? Like the disciples, we do need guidance from others to keep us steady, to remain on track, and to continue holding our spirits up while following Jesus’ lead. This could be a hand pointing us to the next turn or a hand cautioning us, preparing us for some rough roads, twists and turns, potholes and dead ends ahead. Aside from our faith communities, our families, and teachers, this guidance can come to us also in the form of occasional gentle whispers from God’s messengers. We dearly refer to them as our guardian angels. Our dear guardian angels, “Be at our side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.” Fr. The Power of Prayer There are many of us who are not natural cynics and scoffers, many of us do care about this planet, its people, and our environment. We also know there is an interconnectedness between all peoples, an innate commonality. We all love our children and families, we care for our communities, and we all hope for a better future. In this we are part of a World-Wide Family of caring people. As we watch the events unfolding in this world many of us feel powerless, witnessing a parade of discord, confusion, and tragedy often while feeling as helpless bystanders... still we desire and hope for a way to make some small positive difference. Well, there is a way; together, collectively, we all possess a very potent power: the Power of Prayer. Today, take a moment and say a prayer. Working together, praying together, our collective prayers are powerful, and they can make a difference. Just as a choir is composed of many different voices, the blended voices of our prayers elevate our soul’s desires, and together, they make a beautiful noise.?
