As a soft skills advocate and trainer, I’m always excited to see initiatives like #UNTAPPED, which highlight the importance of skills-first hiring practices. This documentary shows how focusing on real-life competencies rather than traditional qualifications can open doors for untapped talent, particularly those who may have been overlooked in more conventional hiring processes. In my work, I’ve seen firsthand how essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are in today’s job market—often more so than a degree on paper. Watching the journeys of these Year Up graduates as they break through barriers and redefine the notion of what it means to be “qualified” is powerful. It’s a reminder that when employers broaden their criteria to include talent from diverse backgrounds, not only do they uplift individuals, but they also strengthen their own workforce. This is a message I try to embed in every training session I lead—skills are transferable, and everyone deserves the opportunity to prove their potential. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in my career journey: In 2019, I made the tough call to depart from Target after nearly 8 incredible years to take a step forward in my personal career. While leaving was hard, the growth and experiences I gained were invaluable. Target wasn't just a workplace; it was a place of personal and professional transformation. The support I received, the opportunities to stretch beyond my comfort zone, and the advocacy of leaders who saw my potential even when I didn't fully recognize it myself—these were the pillars of my time at Target.
