Why these perks matter after your military service: I’ve helped veterans move into their first job after leaving the military, one thing is clear... Choose a company that truly cares about your personal well-being and growth. These perks aren’t just extras; they show that the company is committed to supporting your transition, taking care of you, and helping you succeed in civilian life. When considering a job, these perks are important because they reflect the company’s values. They show that the company respects your time, cares about you as a person, and is genuinely invested in your long-term success, not just the role you fill

Today, I sometimes pause and ask myself: Why did I choose the Merchant Navy? 1. To achieve financial independence at a young age. 2. To provide my family with excellent facilities. 3. To gain international job exposure and experience diverse cultures around the world. 4. To be part of a larger cause—the global supply chain that literally drives the world. 5. To rise above the monotony of a typical 9-to-5 job. 6. To stay updated with the latest technology and global developments. 7. To become a true jack-of-all-trades in a literal sense. There are thousands of mariners who sacrifice a lot: leaving their families, enduring poor internet connectivity, facing social isolation, braving bad weather, and dealing with limited entertainment. Yet, the rewards are immense. The joy of seeing our families thrive and enjoy the benefits of our hard work makes it all worthwhile. It is truly one of the most satisfying jobs in the world.

It's all about the right team Yesterday was the 360th Birthday of the Royal Marines For the vast majority of us, the defining memory will usually be of the bonds forged during great, mundane and bad times This can be magnified in it’s significance after leaving and entering the civilian workforce Being keen to land a role for what we might view as a ‘great company’ can often lead veterans and service leavers to take a position that isn’t right for them We often knowingly enter the wrong firm but with the thought of ‘just get a job and I can sort out the right move once I am out’ But the shackles of employment and the self-conscious perception that we have to prove we got it right can often lead to compounding the misery of joining the wrong team with the knowledge that we have been in better teams previously Sometimes the badge of the firm can be enough to allow us not to do enough due diligence Easy mistake to make but one that can be avoided We have time pressure (sometimes real, sometimes imagined) to find that next role We see an opportunity that on paper ticks the boxes with a good company, so we jump at it We join the wrong team That can cost a lot of time, energy, frustration, money in the long run Look at the people, rather than the 'unit/regiment' Ask around and understand the humans you will deal with day to day, that is more important than the job title or the badge above the door

I am currently 9 months away from transitioning from the military and will begin my terminal leave in April 2025. Question #1: When should I actively start pursuing job opportunities for my transition, such as applying and showing that I am open to work? Question #2: What is a reasonable timeline for companies to properly budget for the position to be filled? #MilitaryTransition #JobOpportunities #CareerPlanning #HRManagers #TalentManagement

Feedback during the job application process is crucial, especially for veterans transitioning to civilian careers. As a transitioning veteran after an exciting and rewarding 21-year career in the US Coast Guard, I am witnessing the unique challenges faced when entering the civilian workforce. Constructive feedback is a game-changer. It provides insight into how we present our skills and experiences, helping to refine our resumes and interview techniques. More importantly, it helps bridge the gap between military and civilian job expectations, ensuring that our valuable and transferable skills are clearly communicated and understood. For employers, offering feedback is a way to support veterans in their transition, recognizing their potential and facilitating their growth. For veterans, accept the feedback with a sense of gratitude and willingness to grow. It’s a new world for us and we’ve been adaptive for a long time. Continue to thrive in the environment of change (don’t follow the advice in the meme ??). Let's work together to create a culture of constructive feedback, enabling veterans to thrive in their post-military careers. #VeteranEmployment #FeedbackMatters #JobApplicationTips #VeteranSuccess #CareerTransition
