This holiday season there will be millions of people talking to, or about, a family member with hearing loss. "Dad, your hearing loss has really become noticeable. Are you struggling to keep up with the conversation? Is that why you are sitting in the corner?" Or, maybe: "Have you noticed that grandma doesn't seem as engaged in the conversations as she used to be? Even with her hearing aids in, she still seems to be struggling to hear us." Unfortunately, an embarrassingly large percentage of people who could benefit from a hearing implant do not get one. Is it just because people do not know about these devices? Many people think hearing aids are the only option they have, which is simply not true. I believe there are several reasons why hearing implants have not been embraced by the masses. Education and awareness are part of the problem, but the whole story is much more complicated. Envoy Medical is forging a path forward with two fully implanted hearing implants. One, the Esteem, is an FDA-approved fully implanted active middle ear implant. The other, the Acclaim, is an investigational fully implanted cochlear implant. Both use the ear, not a microphone, to pick up sound. Both are fully implanted with no externals on the outside of your head, designed to allow for all day, every day hearing. Envoy Medical is not a brand that is owned by one of the large hearing aid companies. We are independent and publicly listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker "COCH." We are setting out to change the hearing industry and the world. We are excited about our future and look forward to pushing the hearing industry forward. With the proliferation of diagnostic labs, abundance of medical information availability online, corporate hospitals offering multi-specialists in one location, increase in online consultations, it appears family doctors are becoming more of ratifiers of the line of treatment suggested by specialists instead of actual prescribers of treatment themselves.
