Many churches develop policies, practices, and procedures based on the unwritten mission of mere survival. Few seem to understand their existence and purpose in the larger context of the kingdom of God. Learning to think outwardly and missionally is critical. To think missionally a church must understand that God’s ultimate purpose is not to build his church but to restore his kingdom.?Jesus did not commission his disciples to build the church but to make disciples (Mt 28:18-20). The Father sent his Son that all creation might be redeemed (Rom 8:18-25). He gave his church the message of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:14-21). To think missionally combines the Great Commission of making disciples with the Great Commandment to love one’s neighbors, and the creation mandate to oversee and care for God’s creation. It means understanding that God is on mission and we are called to enter into the mission of God, which is bigger than the local church. To be missional is to be kingdom-centric, not church-centric. Matthew 20:26 states: "Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." This verse is part of a broader teaching from Jesus to His disciples about leadership and humility. In the context, James and John (two of His disciples) had asked for positions of honor in Jesus’ kingdom. Jesus responds by teaching them that His kingdom operates differently from worldly kingdoms. While in worldly systems, rulers often exert authority over others, in Jesus’ kingdom, greatness is measured by one's willingness to serve. Leadership in the Christian context is not about power or status, but about humility and serving others selflessly. So, Matthew 20:26 emphasizes that true greatness comes from being a servant to others, following Jesus’ own example of humility and service.
